Overview:

Under the general supervision of the Assistant Superintendent of Street Lighting, the Operations Supervisor is responsible for directly supervising the work performed by Shift Supervisors and their staff for the Boston Public Works Street Lighting Division.

Responsibilities:

  • Oversees and supervises the work performed by the three operations shifts during the work week and the weekend on-call team. This work includes light repair (electric and gas), underground troubleshooting, street light pole installation, and emergency response.
  • Responds to complaints on a 24-hour per day basis.
  • Performs a variety of administrative functions related to time and attendance and other personnel matters.
  • Interviews/hires new employees; evaluates the performance of subordinates.
  • Monitors verify and approve attendance records. Makes recommendations on a variety of personnel actions.
  • Coordinates with utility companies and contractors to resolve current Street Lighting issues.
  • Coordinate City departments to ensure lighting is included in applicable project designs.
  • Works with the City Law Department to recover monies owed to the City for damage inflicted by motor vehicles to street lighting equipment.
  • Manages the Street Lighting fleet maintenance needs to ensure proper delivery of vehicles for repair and maintenance while ensuring sufficient vehicles are available to maintain operational continuity.
  • Participates in the review of training and safety procedures and makes recommendations as needed.
  • Participates in the implementation of work process changes and/or software implementation to ensure each work shift is aware and equipped to implement any mutually agreed upon operational changes.
  • Reviews inventory levels and makes recommendations for procurement as needed.
  • Participates in the research and preparation of PWD Street Lighting’s Operations Division FY annual and supplemental budget; analyzes purchase and repair costs to control expenditures.
  • Takes part or engages in the review of equipment and material and makes recommendations that improve the continuity of operations.
  • Performs related work as required.

 

Required to work any emergency as directed by the Chief of Streets or designee.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • Applicants must have at least four (4) years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience in Public Works Street Lighting, with at least two (2) years must have been in a supervisory capacity.
  • Ability to assume responsibility and to direct train subordinate personnel; to supervise the work of others.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with city employees, private contractors, and the general public.
  • Must have and maintain a valid Massachusetts driver’s license.
  • CDL and hoisting license preferred.
  • Must be able to work a flexible work schedule in support of the position's duties.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job.


Boston Residency Required
