Overview:

This is a provisional appointment. 

 

Brief Job Description (essential functions of the job):

 

Under the supervision of the Assistant Commissioner of Weights and Measures, inspects weighing and measuring devices, according to departmental procedures, to ensure they meet specifications, tolerances,and  other technical requirements, and that the device is the proper type for the purpose for which it is to be used. 

 

Responsibilities:

 

  • To investigate complaints.
  • To keep necessary/required records; to submit reports; to inspect and enforce all related weights and measures functions, including, but not limited to, correct net weight, automated retail checkout systems, fuel oil deliveries, unit pricing, and item pricing
  • Collects and submits fees as required
  • Educates proprietors on correct weighing, measuring, and pricing practices.
  • Performs related work as required.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • A High School Diploma or equivalent is required. A bachelor's degree is preferred and may substitute for two (2) years of experience needed.
  • Applicants with two years of related experience are preferred. 
  • Applicants must have considerable knowledge of Chapters 94 and 98 of the Massachusetts General Laws and the National Institute of Standards and Technology Handbook 44.
  • Working knowledge of Avoirdupois, Apothecary, Troy, and Metric weight systems.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job. 
  • Must have and maintain a valid Massachusetts Driver's License. 
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Knowledge of the City of Boston Neighborhoods is a plus. 
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and Google Suite Preferred. 
  • Hoisting License preferred.
  • Massachusetts Weights and Measures Certification will be required within 6 months of appointment.
  • A multi-lingual candidate is preferred.
  • Applicants meeting the minimum entrance qualifications will be considered for this position.
