Overview:

Under the direction of the General Superintendent of Park Maintenance or his/her designee, organizes and directs the maintenance and operation of city parklands and recreation areas under the operating responsibility of the Parks and Recreation Department, and coordinates the maintenance programs with pertinent department divisions, and does related work as required.

Responsibilities:

  • Directs through the General Foreperson, Foreperson, and other employees, the maintenance of assigned parklands, park programming, regional and neighborhood parks, athletic and sport areas.
  • Coordinates maintenance schedules, major equipment assignments, and activities of subordinates and their individual responsibilities throughout the city.
  • Maintains a variety of records, including but not limited to time sheets, work schedules, expenditures, and equipment use.
  • Prepares reports, attends meetings, and works with constituents as required.
  • Investigates and maintains documentation on public complaints pertaining to Parks and Recreation area maintenance.
  • Ensures that departmental policies, procedures, and standards regarding maintenance, equipment use, and health and safety issues are adhered to.
  • Executes annual leaf collection plans across city parks and public spaces.
  • Monitors and maintains an inventory of specialized ballfield maintenance equipment and coordinates the safe, efficient use of mowers, infield drags, liners, and irrigation systems.
  • Maintains accurate records of field maintenance schedules, game and event preparation, weather-related closures, and turf treatment programs.
  • Develops and implements seasonal opening and closing procedures for athletic fields, including turf winterization, spring preparation, and post-season rehabilitation.
  • Executes snow and ice removal strategies for city parks, sidewalks, and pedestrian pathways.
  • Monitors field conditions in response to weather events, coordinating remediation and communications regarding field closures or schedule adjustments.
  • Reports on program effectiveness and provides recommendations for improvements of ballfield initiatives.
  • Coordinates closely with Recreation, Permitting, and Scheduling units to ensure fields are prepared for games, practices, and events.
  • Interacts with community members, permit holders, and athletic league representatives in a professional and responsive manner.
  • Trains and evaluates staff in proper field maintenance techniques and equipment operation.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • At least four (4) years of paid experience in Park Maintenance or related field, of which two (2) years must have been in a supervisory capacity.
  • A college degree in Park Management or a related field may be substituted for the two (2) years of supervisory capacity.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job.
  • This position works out of Franklin Park Service Yard, and the applicant must be able to work any assigned shift and any assigned area.
  • Must have and maintain a valid Massachusetts Driver’s License. 
  • Must have a valid Massachusetts Hoisting License (2A/1C).
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly, concisely, and professionally in both verbal and written form.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build and maintain effective working relationships across all levels of the organization.
  • Ability to convey complex information in a clear and understandable manner.
  • Demonstrated active listening skills and the ability to respond appropriately to feedback.

Pre-Employment Physical, Drug Test, and CORI Required
