Overview:

Under the general direction of the Chief of Streets or designee, the City of Boston Streets Cabinet is seeking a motivated Junior Civil Engineer to deliver projects that will realize the City’s vision to create streets and public spaces that are safe, multimodal, and resilient. This position will work closely under the supervision of seasoned engineers in construction and design and may include working with survey teams, consultant engineers, and contractors.

Responsibilities:

  • Supervises a field party engaged in preliminary and final surveys on construction work.
  • Runs surveys prior to construction to identify and locate surface objects within traverse.
  • Computes area quantities from recorded field notes; checks areas on plot plans.
  • Plots cross-sections and computes areas and volume of earth moved in street excavations.
  • Draws preliminary plans and estimates the cost of construction for a minor project.
  • Makes property surveys and topographic surveys of lands used for various municipal purposes.
  • Stakes outline and grades for the construction of streets.
  • Assists in managing projects, including tasks, including but not limited to managing scope, schedule, and budget; reviewing plans; resolving design, schedule, and logistics issues; approving payments of invoices; preparing reports; coordinating resources; and providing construction support.
  • Provides a comprehensive review of transportation design plans, reports, and studies from City departments or outside engineering firms to ensure safe travel by all modes and for compliance with all authorized design and construction standards, including those issued internally by the City.
  • Coordinates with other departments and agencies by sharing technical knowledge, aiding in contract administration, attending site investigations, and providing engineering consultation on the unique needs of particular sites or problems.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • Two (2) years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, technical or professional experience in civil engineering in such areas as construction, survey, design, transportation, hydraulics, structural, sanitary, environmental, highway, architectural, airport, soils and materials, or any equivalent combination of the required experience. A bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering is preferred and may be substituted for two (2) years of the required experience.
  • A Professional Engineer (PE) license or an Engineer in Training (EIT) Certificate is strongly desired.
  • Knowledge of NACTO’s Urban Bikeway, Street, and Transit Design guides, MassDOT’s Separated Bike Lane Planning and Design Guide, Boston Complete Streets Guidelines, and related standard details and requirements, MUTCD, and relevant AASHTO and FHWA guidelines is desired.
  • Ability to work in multi-disciplinary outcome-oriented teams.
  • Ability to collaborate with a diverse range of public agencies, private consultants, and community groups.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment, focus on detail, and complete tasks as required by the job.
  • Applicants must have and maintain a valid Massachusetts driver's license.

This position may require the employee to attend occasional evening and/or weekend meetings and/or site visits in support of the position's duties.
 

Boston residency is required.
