Overview:

The Digital Preservation Manager leads the development and implementation of a cohesive, holistic digital preservation program, ensuring long-term access to digital collections. This role combines strategic planning and technical expertise to build sustainable preservation infrastructure, establish best practices, and expand the library's capacity to responsibly and sustainably steward digitized and born-digital materials. Working collaboratively across departments and with external partners, the Digital Preservation Manager will transform how BPL preserves and provides access to digital cultural heritage, from rare manuscripts to community archives.

 

Reports to: Chief of Digital and Online Services

Responsibilities:

  • Leads and manages the development of digital preservation policies and strategies for long-term preservation and access to collections of enduring value.
  • Works closely with Special Collections & Research Services, Digital & Online Services, IT, and internal and external partners to identify digital preservation needs and goals.
  • Develops long-term strategy, guidelines, and workflows establishing the digital preservation program, following professional standards and practices.
  • Leads assessments of ongoing financial, technical, and environmental sustainability of digital preservation practices, developing recommendations that balance preservation needs with resource constraints.
  • Develops requirements, specifications, and standards for digital asset creation and acquisition.
  • Supports digitization workflows, ensuring digital preservation needs are considered as part of digital project planning.
  • Develops and implements workflows for accessioning, processing, and preserving born-digital collections, including the establishment of appropriate preservation levels and access systems.
  • Develops and maintains disaster recovery procedures and risk mitigation strategies for digital collections.
  • Provides ongoing input on digital asset management systems and services, including requirements analysis.
  • Advises and trains library staff and external partners on digital preservation practices, workflows, and lifecycle management.
  • Represents the Library and is an active participant in professional organizations and collaborative initiatives concerning digital preservation at the local and national level.
  • Hires, supervises, and evaluates staff as assigned.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • Education – Bachelor's degree from a recognized college or university and a master's degree in library and information science or equivalent. In exceptional instances, specialized education, training, and/or experience may be substituted for a part or all of the educational requirements.
  • Experience – Demonstrated five (5) years of professional experience, with a minimum of three (3) years of experience in digital preservation. At least one (1) year of supervisory and/or management experience strongly desired.
  • Demonstrated strategic thinking, collaboration, and inclusive leadership skills.
  • Demonstrated project management and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience with digital preservation systems and repository platforms.
  • Knowledge of current and emerging digital preservation practices, tools, and systems.
  • Knowledge of digital preservation strategies and issues.
  • Knowledge of digital storage infrastructure and cost modeling.
  • Knowledge of born-digital accessioning practices.
  • Knowledge of trends and practices in web archiving.
  • Proficiency in preservation and technical metadata standards.
  • Experience with scripting languages for automation and data processing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with partners.
  • Applied knowledge of ethical and sustainable approaches to digital preservation.
  • CORI – Must successfully clear a Criminal Offenders Record Information check with the City of Boston.
