Overview:

Position Overview

As the Teen Central Library Assistant, provides customer service to the public in person, by email, and over the telephone; supervises and assists in servicing collections for Teen Central; assists with Teen programs & outreach; and maintains records and files for Teen Central.

 

Reports to:

Central Teen Services Team Leader

Responsibilities:

  • Provides basic reference assistance to the public in person, by email, and over the telephone in Teen Central at the Central Library.
  • Participates in shelving, retrieval, circulation, and delivery of materials for teen services for in-library or take-home use in all formats.
  • Assists patrons with library card registration and patron accounts.
  • Assists the public with in-house borrowing of technology in Teen Central.
  • Assists the public in using photocopiers, scanners, self-check machines, and Pay4Print in Teen Central.
  • Assists with booking rooms for the Lounge in Teen Central.
  • Provides appropriate assistance for programs in Teen Central, including scheduling performers; day-of logistics; assisting with required paperwork, information gathering for promotional efforts; calendar input and digital signage; and all aspects of payment of invoices, including registration of speakers, performers, and tracking of payment checks.
  • Provides appropriate assistance for outreach activities for Teen Central as needed, including scheduling and logistics of outreach visits, preparation of materials for visits, and registration of library cards at outreach visits.
  • Checks in and performs quality control on new acquisitions.
  • Shares responsibility for the daily maintenance of an orderly library atmosphere.
  • Orders supplies as directed by the Teen Services Team Leader.
  • Assists in gathering various statistics and other information in Teen Central.
  • Shares responsibility for and assists in the ongoing, orderly maintenance of the shelves and the shelving and/or shifting of books and other materials in Teen Central.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • Education -- High School Graduate or equivalent. Additional education is desirable. World language skills are desirable.
  • Experience – At least two (2) years of administrative or customer-service-related experience or equivalent education and/or experience to carry out the responsibilities of the position. 
  • Strong customer service skills.
  • Ability to carry out detailed procedures with accuracy.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Proficiency with MS Outlook, Word, Excel, and web browsers.
  • Ability to prepare statistical reports.
  • Demonstrates initiative and appropriate independent decision-making skills.
  • Communicates effectively and presents ideas clearly.
  • Identifies plans and prioritizes administrative job responsibilities and tasks; assists in implementing administrative timelines.
  • Ability to collaborate with library staff, patrons, and vendors.
  • Required to work weekend and evening hours.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job.
  • CORI - Must successfully clear a Criminal Offender record information check with the City of Boston.
