Includes library assistants in large branch libraries whose duties encompass all the functions of Senior Library Assistant-(Branches) LA3 Class DD; supervising Library Assistants plus Library Aides; managing the paper work routines; giving information to public up to the level of use of standard reference works, reader’s advisory service, and usage of the public access catalog; assuming responsibility for the proper functioning of the branch during absence of a librarian.

Responsibilities:

Under the direction of the Branch Librarian or ranking staff member, and in accordance with standard policies and practices, performs or oversees any or all of the following:

  • Trains and directs Library Assistants in accordance with their job descriptions.
  • Trains, directs, and schedules Library Aides in their assigned tasks.
  • Supervises all procedures related to the circulation desk, such as circulation, reserves, requests, pull list, and basic interlibrary loan requests.
  • Prepares revenue reports, supply requisitions, timesheets, and similar routines.
  • Maintains bulletin boards and exhibition cases.
  • Assists patrons in the use of basic reference collections as well as basic use of electronic resources.
  • Uses and assists patrons in the basic use of a variety of library-owned technological equipment, e.g., photocopier, public computer signup systems, audiovisual equipment.
  • Performs all duties included in the position of Senior Library Assistant – (Branches), LA3, Class DD.
  • Processes and edits library and gift material for use within the branch.
  • Attends training when directed.
  • Assumes responsibility for the proper functioning of the branch library during the absence of a librarian.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • Education: High School graduate or GED
  • Demonstrated ability to accept responsibility, to train and handle staff, to plan and supervise work of the unit to satisfactory completion, and to deal successfully with patrons of all age levels.
  • Superior work habits, general organizational ability, knowledge of Boston Public Library practices, relevant training, and experience.
  • Competency in the use of personal computers and Windows software is sufficient to meet the tasks of the position.
  • Tact in dealing with people, dependability, good attendance, and punctuality record.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job.
  • CORI - Must successfully clear a Criminal Offenders Record Information check with the City of Boston.
