Overview:

Under general supervision, directly supervises a team of maintenance mechanics (welders) and other maintenance mechanics engaged in the repair and maintenance of motor vehicles, heavy equipment, street sweepers, snow removal equipment, and the welding, straightening, and grinding of auto bodies, parts, and equipment.  Does other skilled and semi-skilled work engaged primarily in skilled acetylene and/or electric arc welding work for the Parks and Recreation Department. 

Responsibilities:

Performs all duties of a Welder plus the following:

  • Supervises the laying out, cutting, and fitting of materials and the preheating and cleaning of metals.
  • Supervises auto body repair work of all types, including straightening, grinding, and welding.
  • Directs general welding of worn gears using acetylene and electric arc welding.
  • Directs the brazing of various non-ferrous metals.
  • Inspects brushes and grind welds.
  • Supervises the sharpening and tempering of tools and general repair work requiring the use of lathes, drill presses, and similar equipment.
  • Performs related work as required.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • Applicant must have at least three (3) years of paid experience as a welder, of which at least one (1) year must have been in a supervisory capacity. 
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Applicant must have the ability to plan, train, assign, and supervise the work of personnel.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgement and discretion in carrying out work details and allocating work.
  • Ability to observe and enforce safety precautions.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions.
  • Ability to maintain records and to prepare reports.
  • Ability to perform work in the field under varying climatic conditions.
  • Applicant must be able to exercise good judgment and focus on details as required by the job.
  • Must be able to work any assigned shift; any assigned area.
  • Must have and maintain a valid Massachusetts Driver's License.
