Brief Job Description ( essential functions of the job):

 

Under direction of the Commissioner of his/her designee, performs work of moderate difficulty involving supervision and assisting subordinates personnel engaged in the maintenance and repair of a variety of automotive vehicles such as pickup trucks, packers, trailers, earth moving diesel equipment, machining of metal parts, assembly, installation and repair of various machines; ensures preventative maintenance programs are adhered to; assists in the more complex repairs; maintains time and attendance records, requisitions parts and supplies; performs mechanical work and related work as required. 

Responsibilities:

  • Plans, assigns, and supervises rough and finished machining work.
  • Assigns work to ensure timely completion and turnaround of equipment and vehicles.
  • Inspects work in process and at completion.
  • Maintains time records of subordinates and makes reports of work done.
  • Requisitions necessary materials and supplies.
  • Works closely with the following positions to orient, train, and update on equipment: Special Heavy Motor Equipment Operator (SHMEO), Heavy Motor Equipment Operator & Laborer (HMEOL), Motor Equipment Repairperson, and others as assigned.
  • Works closely with the City's Central Fleet Department located at Frontage Road. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, inventory management of all park maintenance vehicles and/or equipment.
  • Works closely with vendors to send overloads or unfinished stock to outside shops to be finished and assembled when required.
  • Assists with the management of vendor contracts and agreements.
  • Responsible for opening and closing the Park Maintenance Garage on a daily basis.
  • Required to tow and deliver vehicles, equipment, utilizing tow trucks, flatbed trucks, and trailers. 
  • Required to perform other job-related duties as necessary and perform related work as required.

Required to work any emergency as directed by the Commissioner of Parks & Recreation or his/her designee.

 

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • At least four (4) years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, paid professional experience as an automotive mechanic, machinist, or motor equipment repairperson; working on a broad range of commonly known light and heavy-duty automotive equipment.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent. 
  • CDL Class B license with an air brake endorsement and Hoisting Licenses must be obtained within six (6) months of appointment.
  • Knowledge of the repair and maintenance of hydraulic systems as they pertain to large grass mowers, snow throwers, and skid steers.
  • Ability to repair all equipment owned by the Parks Department Maintenance Division, including, but not limited to:  large and small grass cutting equipment, plows and sanders, trackless sidewalk machines, etc.
  • Working skills in the diagnosis, maintenance, and repair of light and heavy equipment, and in the application of tools used in the trade.
  • Ability to plan, assign, and supervise the work of subordinate personnel.
  • Must have the ability to exercise good judgement and be able to focus on detail as required by the job. 
  • Must be proficient in basic computer skills and applications.
  • Must be able to work any assigned shift.
  • Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment physical. 
  • Minimum lifting requirement is fifty (50) pounds
  • Must be able to successfully pass the Commonwealth's Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) background check.
