Overview:

The Office of Language and Communication Access (OLCA) strives to empower speakers of all languages and communication abilities to receive the full spectrum of services offered by the City of Boston and play a critical, centralized role in decision-making. 

 

Brief Job Description (essential functions of the job)

 

The City of Boston’s Language and Communications Access Office seeks a highly qualified candidate to serve as an OLCA Compliance Fellow. The OLCA Compliance Fellow is responsible for assisting the Compliance Manager and OLCA Specialists overseeing City of Boston departments in the Implementation and Compliance with our Policy and Ordinance. The Fellow will work directly with the Compliance Manager and support in different projects to ensure accessibility in a variety of programs and events in partnership with different City of Boston Departments.

Responsibilities:

  • Assists Compliance Manager in preparing for meetings, creating agendas, and organizing Departmental Plan meetings.
  • Assists OLCA Specialists and the Training and Development team with tracking Assistive Technology Equipment and other related equipment.
  • Assists with the translation of Vital Documents and Vital Information.
  • Maintains an up-to-date calendar of key projects and events, particularly for yearly recurring events. 
  • Assists OLCA Specialists with related OLCA projects.
  • Supports doing outreach and sharing multilingual information with OLCA partners. 
  • Supports in accommodations requested by departments and ensures proper follow-up and dissemination of accessible events/information. 
  • Identifies and highlights team successes and the impact of language access implementation and compliance.
  • Supports clean-up and formatting of Departmental Plans and helps identify new programs/projects related to this work. 
  • Supports in the creation and updating of the dashboard related to accommodation spending, details, etc.
  • Supports on-site or virtual events that need language accessibility as needed.
  • Creates reports as necessary.
  • Keeps track of Press releases related to OLCA’s work.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • A minimum of two to three (2-3) years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience in office administration, communications, and project management. 
  • An undergraduate and graduate degree with a major in public administration, communication, or office administration, preferred, may be substituted for up to two (2) years of the required experience.
  • Familiar with the concept of language access.
  • Demonstrated cultural competence with diverse ethnic, cultural, and socio-economic groups, multilingual populations, and persons with disabilities. 
  • Ability to effectively respond to and interact with all levels of organizational staff.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills required. 
  • A proactive mindset, and we encourage questions and suggestions on how to make things better and easier.
  • Willingness to learn.
  • Strong writing skills and attention to detail.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Google Suite, and Adobe.
  • A strong organizer who knows how to prioritize time-sensitive work.
  • Critical thinking and problem solving.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.

 

BOSTON RESIDENCY REQUIRED

 

Terms:

Union/Salary Plan/Grade: Non-Union/ $25 per hour

Hours per week: 30

Duration: October 2025 - June 2027
