Position Overview:

Under the direction of the Delivery Desk Supervisor or delegate, the Special Library Assistant II will perform public service and functional duties at the Delivery Desk and in the stacks, including: circulation, library card registration, and database searching for materials shelved in the Central Library stacks.

Delivery Desk Supervisor or delegate

Responsibilities:

Under immediate supervision and in accordance with standard policy and practices, performs any or all of the following: 

  • Greets and directs library patrons in person, providing direction and information.
  • Participates in related operations, including but not limited to charging and discharging materials in all formats, receiving and recording fines, processing reserves, placing holds, registering borrowers, issuing library cards, maintaining patrons' records, and addressing customer service issues.
  • Communicates and interprets BPL policies and procedures in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Identifies, refers to problems, and suggests solutions to the supervisor.
  • Performs title/item searches using internal electronic and print bibliographic resources.
  • Modifies circulation parameters in item records according to BPL guidelines. Creates on-the-fly records for items that are not in the ILS.
  • Receives and routes requests, maintains reserve shelf, handles pull list, accepts requests for books, periodicals, and other materials from closed stack areas, inspects for completeness, and retrieves materials.
  • Receives, sorts, shelves, shifts, verifies, delivers, and traces records and searches shelves for books. May, on occasion, re-check locations for materials not located in the initial search.
  • Provides simple equipment maintenance and troubleshooting,e.g., turning on and off, cleaning, filling with paper, replacing toner cartridges, etc, for machines within the department or immediately adjacent to the service desk.
  • Performs general clerical activities, including maintaining statistics, compiling reports, and managing paper or electronic files.
  • Assists with the daily maintenance of an orderly library atmosphere in the public areas.
  • Assists borrower services as needed.
  • Performs other related duties.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • Education - High School graduate or equivalent, some additional education is desirable.
  • Experience - At least two (2) years of library or related experience in a library setting, including searching for library records in an online environment, preferred.
  • Ability to read and interpret bibliographic information.
  • Ability to carry out detailed procedures with accuracy.
  • Ability to work under pressure and to meet deadlines following the Library's established system of processing priorities.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrates initiative in performing job duties.
  • Communicates effectively and presents ideas clearly.
  • Strong customer service skills.

Requirements:

  • Proficiency in basic use of a PC at the level necessary to successfully complete the task of the job.
  • Ability to work in a variety of foreign languages may be preferred.
  • Ability to exercise good judgement and focus on detail as required by the job.
  • CORI- Must successfully clear a Criminal Offenders record information check with the City of Boston.
