Overview:

The City of Boston’s Office of Youth Employment & Opportunity is seeking a Communications Fellow to support the Department’s external and internal communications. This position is for self-motivated individuals with an interest in communications, community engagement, and youth development. 

 

Under the direction of the Senior Manager of Engagement & Outreach, the Communications Fellow will advance the development of external and internal communications for the Office of Youth Employment & Opportunity. 

 

The Engagement and Outreach Team is led by the Senior Manager of Engagement and Outreach and includes three full time staff members and four part-time interns. 

Responsibilities:

Important responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Implements communication strategies that support the organizational goals of employing, developing, and engaging Boston’s young people.
  • Develops and disseminates messaging for diverse audiences from senior leadership.
  • Regularly reviews and updates website content to reflect seasonal employment updates, department announcements, and relevant department events.
  • Monitors, measures, and tracks the communication campaign and website performance.
  • Advances communications and marketing special projects and initiatives, as needed.
  • Prepares reports on website traffic, user engagement, and content performance, at times in collaboration with the Data, Research, and Evaluation Team, as needed.
  • Drafts and develops seasonal impact reports.
  • Ensure that all communications and marketing material aligns with brand standards.
  • Works with the internal design and IT teams to ensure seamless communication and implementation of web-related and marketing projects.
  • Maintain digital media archives, including photos and videos.
  • Liaise with the media and handle requests for interviews, statements, etc., as needed.
  • Performs related work as required.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, Journalism, Media Studies, or a related field.
  • Three years of relevant full or part-time experience in email marketing, content creation, and/or website management. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with a strong grasp of grammar, tone, and audience-specific messaging.
  • Experience with email marketing automation software like Constant Contact.
  • Experience with graphic design and content production software like Canva. 
  • Experience with automated text message campaign software like Genasys, a plus.
  • Working knowledge of Google Suite.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks or projects and maintain attention to detail. 
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as a part of a diverse team.
  • Comfortable receiving and integrating feedback.
  • Dependability, flexibility, and the ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment. 
  • Experience interacting with young people of different cultures and backgrounds is preferred due to the diverse population of constituents that we serve.

Terms:

  • Start and End Date:  Flexible
  • Hours/Pay: Up to 30 hours per week, $32.00/hr.
  • This part-time, two year position does not provide insurance benefits.
  • In-person position requires attendance at department events, as needed.
  • Laptops and/or tablets will be provided.
