Overview:

The Boston Public Library is seeking applicants for a part-time Greeter position in Special Collections, located at the Central Library in Copley Square. The person in this position will welcome visitors to the department, perform basic administrative tasks, and support public programs, tours, and events in Special Collections.

Responsibilities:

  • Staffs the reception desk in the Special Collections Lobby during public hours when researchers are not scheduled in the Reading Room.
  • Greets visitors for meetings, programs, or events in special collections, including signing-in visitors and directing them where to leave coats and bags. Welcomes all visitors in a manner that creates an inclusive and friendly environment.
  • Answers directional and informational questions about the collections and library, referring questions to supervisors as needed.
  • Answers the telephone at the reception desk, takes messages, and transfers phone calls as needed.
  • Assists in the collection and preparation of statistics related to/about special collections visitors.
  • Assists in administrative tasks to support Special Collections programs, classes, and tours.
  • Performs other related and/or comparable duties as assigned.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated strong oral and written communication skills. Communicates effectively and presents ideas clearly.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with library staff, patrons, and the public.
  • Ability to perform detailed procedures with speed and accuracy.
  • Ability to enter data accurately and efficiently into various online systems or files.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Word, Excel, and Google Suite.
  • Willingness to work up to 18 hours per week.
  • Education-High school graduate or equivalent; Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree from an accredited college or university preferred.
  • Residency-Must be a resident of the City of Boston upon the first day of hire.
  • CORI-Must successfully clear a Criminal Offenders Record Information check with the City of Boston.

 

Terms: Non-union/$20 per hour

Hours per week: Up to 18 hours per week
