Overview:

Under general supervision, directly supervises and performs work of caring for grass and shrubbery and keeping grounds of buildings in a city park or playground clean and in an orderly condition. Performs related work as required.

Responsibilities:

  • Supervises employees in lower-grade positions as they carry out various tasks related to the maintenance and upkeep of grounds in parks and fields.
  • Keeps parks in clean and orderly condition by performing park maintenance work such as cutting and watering grass, caring for flowers, trimming shrubbery, and picking up papers.
  • Makes minor repairs to park equipment.
  • Ensures that park buildings and gates are opened and closed at the proper time.
  • Lines sports fields for various games (lines on sports fields help define boundaries, mark areas of play, and guide players and officials).
  • Keeps order in the park or playground (enforce park rules and regulations by reporting incidents to the proper authorities, i.e.,  Animal Control, Park Rangers, Boston Police).

Must be able to work any assigned shift in any assigned area.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • This position is open only to employees of the Parks and Recreation Department in accordance with the provisions of Massachusetts General Laws, Chapter 31, Section 8, who have at least one (1) year of groundskeeping experience.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job.
  • Must have and maintain a Massachusetts driver's license.

Qualifications acquired on the job:

  • Proficiency in using tools and machinery like lawnmowers, trimmers, and blowers.
  • Knowledge of safety protocols related to park maintenance and visitor safety.
  • Ability to perform repairs and upkeep of park facilities and equipment.
  • Ability to identify issues in the park and develop practical solutions.
