Overview:

The Deputy Press Secretary reports to the Press Secretary and works to support the development and implementation of the Mayor’s and the City of Boston’s communication strategies. The Deputy Press Secretary is responsible for assisting with the management of communication activities for all citywide departments, coordinating both short and long-term media strategy, and assisting with overseeing communications and public relations functions, including press releases, media inquiries, press conferences, speaking engagements, and interviews for all forms of news organizations.

Responsibilities:

  • Develops key messaging and implements communication strategies relevant to the Mayor’s priorities.
  • Works with the Press Secretary and Chief Communications Officer to identify opportunities for thoughtful media coverage as part of a larger strategy to advance the Mayor’s priorities.
  • Assists with responding to all media inquiries in a timely manner.
  • Prepares, edits, and produces media materials, including press releases, statements, op-eds, quotes, talking points, local columns, and briefing material.
  • Works with all city departments to coordinate messaging, advising city officials on talking points and appropriate messaging.
  • Prepares the Mayor for media interviews and staff public events.
  • Assists with the management of all aspects of the communications and public relations functions, including press releases, media relations, publicity, and speaking agendas/engagements.
  • Actively engages, cultivates, and manages press relationships.
  • Assist in responding to Freedom of Information Act and public records requests as needed.
  • Performs related work as required.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • At least four (4) years full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience in media relations work, communications, or related field. Additional experience preferred.
  • A bachelor’s degree or equivalent in communications, English, journalism, public relations, government, public policy, or a related field is strongly preferred and may be substituted for two (2) years of the required experience. 
  • Two (2) years of supervisory experience preferred.
  • Familiarity with the City of Boston and management experience is preferred.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills are required.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job.
  • Ability to think strategically and prepare clear, concise communication material.
  • Experience with implementing and managing a variety of key initiatives concurrently.
  • Ability to be creative and thoughtful on how new media technologies can be utilized.
  • Fluency in Spanish is strongly preferred.
