Overview:

Under general supervision, directly supervises a large group of laborers and other employees engaged in maintenance and cleaning of parks grounds, buildings, and other facilities, who may be assigned to various districts throughout the city, including school department athletic fields under the jurisdiction of the Parks Department; and does related work as required (such as training of subordinates in new work methods; recycling; and updating existing work methods).  

Responsibilities:

All duties of lower graded Park Maintenance position plus the following:

  • Supervises and performs park maintenance work such as cutting, trimming, and watering grass, caring for flowers, trimming & pruning shrubbery, empty barrels, and paper picking.
  • Responsible for complete fall cleanup and snow removal, treating all hardscapes, sidewalks, and stairs. 
  • Responsible for clearing fence lines, parks, and court perimeters for safety and visibility.
  • Prune shrubs and bushes as well as remove weeds and invasive plant management.
  • Maintains any green infrastructure in parks like rain gardens and bio-retention.
  • Properly mulches trees and maintains flower beds (annuals and perennials).
  • Responsible for the general care and maintenance of the parks.
  • Responsible for proper maintenance of equipment (blowers, mowers, weed whackers, snow blowers).
  • Keeps an accurate inventory and properly maintains your fleet (vehicles) clean at the end of your shift.
  • Requisition supplies and materials.
  • Inspects all work to ensure that it is performed properly.
  • Prepares required reports.
  • Performs related work as required.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Applicants must have knowledge of the methods, tools, and equipment used in park maintenance.
  • Ability to plan, train, assign, and supervise the work of personnel.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment and discretion in carrying out work details and allocating work.
  • Ability to observe and enforce safety precautions.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions.
  • Ability to maintain records and to prepare reports.
  • Ability to perform work in the field under varying climatic conditions.
  • Applicants must be able to exercise good judgment and focus on details as required by the job.
  • Applicants will work any assigned area and assigned shift.

MUST HAVE AND MAINTAIN A MASSACHUSETTS DRIVER'S LICENSE

MUST BE ABLE TO OBTAIN A VALID MASSACHUSETTS HOISTING LICENSE WITHIN THE FIRST SIX (6) MONTHS OF PROMOTION
