Overview:

The team of Community Engagement Managers leads how the agency expands who we engage through building relationships and identifying opportunities to lift up the voices of underserved and historically marginalized populations. Our target populations for this position to focus on are housing advocates and business owners and their employees. This person will report to the Deputy Director of Community Engagement.

Responsibilities:

  • Have strong relationships with housing advocates and/or business owners and their employees, and the ability to expand and grow new relationships to support the work of the Planning Department. Our goal is to bring these groups into our planning and project engagement processes.
  • Create new communication pathways with these populations to get new people excited about our work.
  • Communicate how and why the Planning Department’s work matters to people who may not see our work as intersecting with their lives.
  • Identify opportunities to creatively engage and expand who and how we engage people in our projects and planning initiatives, including through social media, blog posts, newsletters, videos, and other opportunities for storytelling.
  • Support inclusive community engagement strategy and implementation across divisions within the Planning Department, including Planning & Zoning, Real Estate, Development Review, and Urban Design.
  • Create materials and systems to support other staff in engaging target populations and organizations.
  • Facilitate opportunities for connecting and contracting with community organizations to reach certain populations when necessary.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • Five plus (5+) years of experience related to supporting small businesses, housing advocacy, community engagement, community organizing, non-profit, or other related work.
  • Strong organizing and relationship-building skills.
  • Fluency in Haitian Creole, Mandarin, Cantonese, or other language skills beyond English preferred.
  • Very strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Existing knowledge of or the eagerness to learn complex material related to planning, zoning, disposition of real estate, and review of development projects.
  • Strong strategic thinker. Experience creating engagement strategies that prioritize equitable engagement approaches.
  • Strong systems thinker. Ready to create a new approach, tools, and resources to allow for consistent engagement.
  • Strong project management skills and ability to effectively prioritize.
  • Sensitivity and understanding of communicating with different language and cultural groups.
  • Creative self-starter.
  • Highly collaborative and flexible.

BOSTON RESIDENCY REQUIRED

 

Terms:
Union/Salary Plan/Grade: Non-Union / ($86,000 - $118,000)
Hours per week: 35
