Overview:

The Applications Support Specialist will work under the direction of the Chief Technology Officer for the Boston Fire Department within the Information Technology Division. This position will interact with Boston Uniformed Personnel of all ranks, City Managers, City Project Managers, City Data Analytical Team, Sponsors, key stakeholders, and civilians.

 

This role is engaged in all phases of the software development lifecycle, including initial planning, designing, coding, deployment, training, and ongoing maintenance for the Fire Department, including but not limited to Fire Companies' existing Time and Attendance Software, Fire Prevention's Abatements System, Annual Inspection, Certificate of Occupancy. Medical Office's injury and case applications, Payroll, and reporting. Assist users with the enterprise applications such as Telestaff, Permitting, and Licensing (Hansen), PeopleSoft HCM, and other programs. Customize Mobile Computing Terminal (MCT) utilizing Intergraph Computer Aid Dispatch (CAD) program screens and buttons. Performs quality reviews and analysis of the databases for analytical purposes. This position will develop and support interface applications development and operations primarily on Microsoft Office, Access, SQL Reporting and queries, VBA, Adobe Acrobat, Hansen, HCM, and others. The successful applicant is expected to have the ability to explore ongoing new technology skills.

Responsibilities:

 

  • Develop and document business requirements systems for the Fire Department.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot existing software.
  • Assist, contribute ideas, and support the new Time and Attendance Scheduling System.
  • Serve as Fire Department liaison to other departments' technical implementers for databases and specific applications.
  • Create, configure, and automate technical business processes in various applications.
  • Perform data manipulation and analysis.
  • Data management and administration.
  • Create forms, reports, and documentation.
  • Develop SQL and Access Programs and administer SQL Server Database.
  • Perform related work as required.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • Applicants must possess three (3) years of full-time, or equivalent five (5) years of part-time, of supporting SQL and software.
  • Professional development or programming and delivery experience is preferred in a position related to the Software Development, utilization and configuration of Microsoft Office Professional, SQL Client/Server base, VBA, Crystal Reports, Adobe Acrobat, GIS Technology.
  • Strong Analytical and strong problem-solving skills.
  • Experience in the public sector (especially in a city or local government) is highly desirable.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and be detail-oriented.
  • Strong candidates will be able to work independently without oversight and will have a good understanding of database concepts and technical relationships with a variety of database products.
  • Applicants must have strong interpersonal skills and have demonstrated an ability to work effectively in a team environment.
