Brief Job Description (essential functions of the job):

 

Under the supervision of the Administrative Criminalist V or a designee, the Evidence Technician Supervisor will be assigned to the Forensic Laboratory.

Responsibilities:

  • Supervise Evidence Technicians.
  • May assist in hiring new Evidence Technicians.
  • Evaluate and implement new equipment and procedures in evidence receiving.
  • Receives, packages, and labels evidence.
  • Maintains chain of custody and ensures the integrity and viability of materials for testing.
  • Receives and screens visitors to the Laboratory, arranges appointments, attends to answering and transferring calls, and assists with inquiries.
  • Performs administrative and clerical functions under the direction of the Administrative Criminalist V.
  • Types reports, memorandums, letters, and other correspondence, as needed.
  • Performs electronic data entry and retrieval.
  • May assist in submitting weekly time and attendance sheets for the Laboratory.
  • Files folders and records.
  • Records minutes of laboratory meetings.
  • Maintains files and records in accordance with laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Tracks, orders, and maintains clerical lab supplies.
  • Assists with maintaining the Laboratory budget.
  • Photocopies/scans and prepares mailings of laboratory correspondence and reports.
  • Compiles statistical data from records or reports.
  • Generates monthly and annual statistics.
  • Assists with discovery requests, copies case records, and prepares discovery packets.
  • Distribution of documents to appropriate agencies.
  • Participate in continuing education, conferences, training, and other seminars relative to forensic science and evidence management.
  • Performs related work as required.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • Four (4) years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, paid professional experience in office or business administration, preferably in a clinic or laboratory in which the duties included handling highly confidential information.
  • A Bachelor's degree is preferred and may be substituted for two (2) years of the required experience in office or business administration, preferably in a clinic or laboratory in which the duties include handling highly confidential information. 
  • One (1) year of supervisory experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of chain of custody and rules of evidence.
  • Knowledge of evidence packaging, documentation, and security procedures for case records and evidence.
  • Experience in using Google Office Suite (Docs, Sheets, Slides, Forms) and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, etc.) is strongly preferred.
  • Strong leadership skills.
  • Strong organizational, oral, and written skills; must appreciate and respect the confidentiality requirements.
  • Knowledge of routine laboratory safety rules, regulations, and procedures.
  • Ability to receive and document materials and supplies; to compile data and generate a variety of reports.
  • Ability to follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers.
  • Knowledge of a working crime laboratory, including QA/QC.
  • Must be able to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job.
