Overview:

The Accessibility & Inclusion Training Specialist works to reduce attitudinal and policy barriers within the City of Boston as an integral part of furthering the mission of the Commission on Persons with Disabilities. The Accessibility & Inclusion Training Specialist works closely with Equity & Inclusion cabinet training staff, City departments, and community partners. Duties are performed under the general direction of the Chief of Staff and directly report to this position. One of seven staff members of the Commission team is made up of the Commissioner, Chief of Staff, Architectural Access Director, Architectural Access Specialists, Outreach and Engagement Specialist, Program Manager, and Staff Support Specialist.

Responsibilities:

  • Create, organize, plan, and present training modules for internal City of Boston departments and external groups on various disability topics.
  • Research topics, develop content, and create training tools, including PowerPoint, Google Slides presentations, pre recorded videos for general consumption, interactive webinars, and in person training sessions.
  • Create and/or acquire guides, course materials, fact sheets, and other existing resources to use during training sessions. Topics may include, but are not limited to, ADA Title I, Title II, and Title III requirements for agencies, as relevant, and best practices for interpersonal interactions with persons with disabilities.
  • Create content for the general public, such as informational videos and webinars with introductions to basic disability topics.
  • Work with City departments to identify specific work functions and develop targeted training programs on related disability topics.
  • Work with the Outreach and Engagement Specialist and the Chief of Staff to identify other topics for trainings that may be helpful and relevant to the Commission’s mission.
  • Coordinate with the Office of Language and Communication Access and other departments in the Equity and Inclusion Cabinet to conduct shared trainings.
  • Keep track of City employees trained at all trainings and dates of trainings.
  • Ensure accessibility, inclusion, and disability accommodations as needed for attendees at all trainings.
  • Manage the format and content of a Boston.gov library of publicly available training videos.
  • Provide consultation and referral services to other City of Boston departments on basic resources available for working with people with disabilities. Makes referrals to the Commission Chief of Staff and/or Commissioner regarding compliance concerns as necessary.
  • Partner with community organizations to provide external trainings to City departments.
  • Evaluate training via assessment, surveys, and feedback.
  • Maintain knowledge of the latest trends in training and development.
  • Prepare and implement training budget; maintain records and reports of expenses.
  • Work with other staff to complete established office procedures that ensure effective daily operation of the office. Duties may include fielding telephone calls, receiving and directing visitors, processing incoming and outgoing mail, and maintaining databases and mailing lists.
  • Perform related work as required.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • A minimum of three (3) years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience in public speaking, education, disability studies, or a similar field is required.
  • An undergraduate degree with a major in disability studies, public administration, communications, human resources, or equivalent experience.
  • Demonstrated communication, presentation, interpersonal, organizational, and follow-up skills.
  • Working knowledge of computer based software, such as Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel) and Google Suite (Google Documents, Google Spreadsheets) is required.
  • Ability to multitask and manage several projects at once while meeting various deadlines.
  • Willingness to work directly with multiple City departments.
  • Demonstrated cultural competence with diverse ethnic, cultural, and socio-economic groups, multilingual populations, and persons with disabilities.
  • Ability to effectively respond to and interact with all levels of organizational staff.
  • Excellent analytical skills.
  • Strong writing skills, including the ability to prepare reports, presentations, and accurate records.
