Overview:

The Mayor's Office is seeking an experienced, thoughtful, and creative Digital Content and Data Visualization Strategist who is passionate about visually communicating the important work of the City of Boston on Mayor Michelle Wu's social media platforms.

 

The Digital Content and Data Visualization Strategist will report to the Mayor's Digital Communications Director and support the Mayor's Digital Team in advancing Mayor Wu's vision by producing engaging and compelling digital art, social media content, event collateral, print materials, and more while also creating visualizations of data sets and analyzing data sets to find insight which will inform and serve the diverse communities of Boston.

Responsibilities:

  • Conceptualize and design visually compelling graphics, social media content, event collateral, and print materials that align with the Mayor’s brand and communication objectives.
  • Work closely with the Digital Communications Director, public information officers, and City departments to ensure cohesive messaging and brand consistency.
  • Create and manage engaging social media campaigns, incorporating data insights to drive engagement and improve public understanding of government initiatives.
  • Develop and execute comprehensive digital strategies to engage diverse audiences across multiple platforms, including social media, websites, presentations, and print.
  • Analyze and interpret complex data sets to uncover insights and transform them into visually compelling content, including reports, dashboards, and social media graphics.
  • Design and publish digital content, including motion graphics and interactive media, to enhance engagement.
  • Monitor trends in social media, web analytics, and digital engagement to optimize content performance.
  • Develop data-driven narratives to enhance public communication, using tools like Tableau, Power BI, or R Studio to create impactful visualizations.
  • Deliver presentations, reports, and workshops on data insights, social media trends, and digital engagement strategies.
  • Assist in photography and video projects to create cohesive multimedia storytelling.
  • Perform related work as required. 

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

Required:

  • Minimum of three (3) years of professional graphic design and/or social media management experience, with a portfolio showcasing your ability to create visually compelling digital content.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, including Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign, as well as data analytics software.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, the ability to explain complex concepts in an accessible way to learners, and to speak in public and make presentations.
  • Highly organized, capable of managing multiple projects at once, with a readiness to adapt to shifting priorities.
  • Experience with building and managing web pages and using Drupal.
  • Comfortable in a fast-paced environment and in rapid-response situations, including after 5 PM and on weekends as needed.
  • Detail-oriented with the ability to exercise discretion and good judgment.
  • Experience with social media management and producing and publishing a variety of social media content.
  • Desire to be a part of a dedicated team of professionals who support one another, treat each other with respect, and share the same goal of delivering for the people of Boston.

 

Preferred:

  • Past experience in government or political work.
  • Proficiency in Adobe After Effects and motion graphics animation.
  • Familiarity with Meta Creator Studio and other social media management tools.
  • Proficient with Instagram, TikTok, Bluesky, and other major social media platforms, as well as Slack, Google Drive, and project management tools such as Trello and Asana.
  • Proficiency in languages other than English.
