Overview:

The Boston Transportation Department is seeking a Neighborhood Planning Coordinator to oversee the implementation of neighborhood transportation projects with a focus on improving multi-modal service to increase safety ridership and reduce emissions.

 

Reporting to the Chief of Streets or designee, the Neighborhood Planning Coordinator leads a team of planners to develop overall policy, collaborate with advocacy and neighborhood groups, and work with city and state agencies to advance Boston's transportation agenda.

 

The Neighborhood Planning Coordinator works closely with other departments and agencies to implement the Boston Transportation Department's priority projects.

 

The position requires an understanding of the pressing need for action and patience and persistence to catalyze change in an environment where needs, resources, and opportunities vary enormously. The selected candidate will have proven skills that include the ability to collaborate with a diverse range of public agencies, private constants, and community groups; strong research, writing, oral, and graphic presentation skills; interest in transportation interface with urban design and public realm; and the ability to envision and implement cutting-edge initiatives.

Responsibilities:

  • Leads the Neighborhood planning in the implementation of the City of Boston's overall public transportation agenda including managing project-based community processes using digital, in-person, and on-the-ground (tactical engagement).
  • Manages and supervises staff, e.g., setting the work plan, budgeting, and staff assignment.
  • Develops initiatives focusing on the city's right-of-way, such as bicycle lanes, transit-only lanes, bus stops, and amenities, with an emphasis on improving services to under-served neighborhoods.
  • Prioritizes and develops strategies to implement Go Boston 2030 projects.
  • Creates partnerships with local and national institutions and advocacy groups to advance the city's transportation priorities.
  • Designs and mobilizes education campaigns by managing online and in-the-community outreach.
  • Performs related work as required.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • Five (5) years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, professional or technical experience in urban planning, regional planning, land use planning, or transportation planning, the duties of which included working on public transit projects with a variety of stakeholders and of which at least three (3) years must have been in a professional capacity, at at least (1) year must have been in a supervisory capacity.
  • A bachelor's degree in urban planning, regional planning, transportation, or a related field is preferred and may be substituted for two (2) years of the required experience. A master's degree in the above-mentioned field may be substituted for three (3) years of the required experience. Supervisory experience may not be substituted.
  • Candidates with a Master's Degree and GIS mapping skills strongly preferred.
  • Experience with NATCO's Transit, Street, and Urban Bikeway Design guides, Boston Complete Streets Guidelines, and working knowledge of MUTCD and relevant AASHTO and FHWA guidelines strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated track record in leading a multidisciplinary team to successfully complete complex projects.
  • Demonstrated understanding of public transit projects.
  • Working knowledge of designing, implementing, and evaluating pilot projects using measures such as lane markings, flex posts, and traffic signal timing changes.
  • Ability to prepare clear and concise reports; to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; and to act in a professional manner with co-workers, outside agencies, and members of the public.
  • Proven research, writing, oral, and graphic presentation skills.
