Applicants must meet all of the following criteria to be considered eligible for appointment:
- Be between 18 and 25 years of age by July 7, 2025,
- Reside in the City of Boston and have maintained consecutive residency for the last two years (July 7, 2023 - present),
- High school graduate or possess an equivalency certificate by July 7, 2025,
- Possess an active, valid Massachusetts Driver's License by July 7, 2025,
- Meet the same physical fitness standards required of Boston Police Recruit Officers,
- Demonstrated ability to exercise good judgement and maintain attention to detail as required by the job,
- Be a United States Citizen, Naturalized U.S. Citizen, or Permanent Lawful Resident
Screening Process
Candidates who advance in the selection process will undergo an extensive screening, which includes:
- A comprehensive background investigation, including criminal and driving history checks,
- In-Person interview,
- Drug testing,
- A pre-employment physical examination,
- A psychological evaluation.
Additional Information
- If appointed, Cadets must complete a rigorous 4-week Cadet Training Program at the Boston Police Academy, which includes both academic and physical training.
- Cadets do not carry firearms and do not have the power of arrest.
- Cadets are considered civilian employees of the City of Boston for the purposes of workers' compensation.
