Overview:

Every year, millions of people interact with the City of Boston to do everything from  finding information on City services to paying a parking ticket or starting a business. At Boston Digital Service, we believe these experiences should be easy to find, understand, navigate – even delightful.

Boston Digital Service sits within the Department of Innovation and Technology (DoIT) and partners with City departments to improve the programs, services, products, and initiatives that make the City of Boston a great place to live. We’re a cross-functional team with a mission to improve the user experience of existing services, better engage and communicate with our residents, and build new systems to improve how the City delivers services.

We are seeking a Low-Code Digital Application Builder & Coach to join our Boston Digital Service. In this role, you will work with product managers, UI designers, and UX researchers to create digital applications for service delivery and internal workflows across city government. You should be comfortable translating business requirements into low-code applications and coaching budding no-code product owners to build and maintain their own applications. You should have expertise with Airtable and a passion for learning new low-code/no-code platforms.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to scope, design, build, test, and launch low-code digital applications that simplify and automate internal processes and create smooth and welcoming experiences for residents engaging with city services.
  • Develop documentation throughout the application development life cycle.
  • Be the City’s expert on no-code/low-code platforms. Stay informed about industry best practices, technologies, tools, and standards.
  • Troubleshoot and correct problems. Ensure the platforms are well-maintained.
  • Thoroughly test and ensure quality as new and modified solutions are released.
  • Propose solution options to diverse stakeholders and support decision-making on technical design choices.
  • Know what data needs to be captured and measured, and build in necessary instrumentation while keeping user experience at top of mind.
  • Ensure that the platform(s)’s configuration is compliant with organizational requirements and data management best practices.
  • Build and maintain integrations with other City of Boston systems to remain compatible with data integration and security standards and remain consistent with current industry protocols.
  • Work with other DoIT teams to develop and implement a common technology and integration strategy across platform(s)
  • Support procurement decision-making for the City’s no-code platform stack.
  • Support continuous improvement by investigating technologies and presenting these for architectural review.
  • Build out training & certification for internal application builders and owners. Coach and support cohorts of builders.
  • Assist in project planning and estimation.
  • Perform related work as required.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  •  At minimum, two to four (2-4) years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience building no-code or low-code applications for customer-facing and internal workflows. Relevant and applicable project or boot camp experience can be substituted for work experience.
  • A bachelor's degree in related field is preferred and may be substituted for two (2) years of the required experience.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft applications and Google Suite.
  • Additional experience in UI/UX design, service design, product management, or software development is a plus.
  • Experience building in Airtable (including robust relational databases, complex  automations and formulas, clean multi-faceted interfaces, and basic scripting) is required.
  • Experience with WYSIWYG frontend platforms (Softr, Bubble, etc) and Integration as-a-service platforms (Zapier, Make, etc) is a plus.
  • Experience working with agile methodologies and on cross-functional software development teams.
  • Knowledge of version control (e.g., Git) and development best practices.
  • Familiarity with web and mobile user interface design best practices.
  • Have a user-centric philosophy of application development, with a strong desire to understand underlying user needs, and the ability to effectively serve them with well-designed technology.
  • Strong candidates will be able to work independently with little direct oversight and will welcome collaboration with diverse stakeholders, executives, and peers.
  • Must have strong written and verbal communication skills and have demonstrated an ability to work effectively in a team environment.

Studies have shown that women and people of color are less likely to apply for jobs unless they believe they can perform every job description task. We are most interested in finding the best candidate for the job, and that candidate may come from a less traditional background. The City may consider an equivalent combination of knowledge, skills, education, and experience to meet  minimum qualifications. If you are interested in applying, we encourage you to think broadly about your background and skill set for the role.

BOSTON RESIDENCY REQUIRED - You must live within Boston city limits at the start of your employment.
