Overview:

The Special Projects Senior Manager for the Infrastructure and Design team will serve as a key team member to support the success of the Infrastructure and Design Department. Reporting to the Deputy Chief for Infrastructure and Design, the Special Projects Director supports all stages of process implementation, including a special focus on prioritizing and carrying out safety improvements to implement the Safety Surge program. The Special Projects Director also helps manage constituent services workflows and responses and ensures proper communication between the Infrastructure & Design team and advocates, elected officials, internal departments, and external agencies.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist the Deputy Chief in creating and reinforcing processes to achieve departmental success, including benchmarking key performance indicators, tracking urgent demands through resolution, and reinforcing team focus on key priorities, including the Safety Surge program.
  • Assist the Deputy Chief in managing process changes to ensure smooth functioning of the team, including project delivery and excellent constituent services.
  • Assist the Deputy Chief with strategic planning and workforce development.
  • Manage urgent situations related to community engagement, communication, interdepartmental relations, and constituent services.
  • Communicate and maintain relationships with advocates, neighborhood groups, constituents, elected officials, city and state agencies, other city departments, and teams on behalf of the Infrastructure and Design Department.
  • Work closely and collaboratively with the Directors of Design, Construction, Structures, Project Controls, and their teams.
  • Oversee special projects as requested by the Deputy Chief, including those related to policy issues, constituent services, and external communications.
  • Perform related work as required.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • Five (5) years of full-time or equivalent part-time experience in special projects, business administration, program management, legislative or executive staffing, or equivalent work; the major duties of which include one (1) or more of the following functions: personnel management, project management, communications, or inter-governmental relations.
  • A bachelor’s degree may be substituted for two (2) years of the required experience.
  • Excellent planning, organization, and project management skills, with the ability to prioritize the most important and pressing work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work well, establish, and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and other departmental staff.
  • Familiarity with NACTO’s Transit, Street, and Urban Bikeway Design guides, Boston Complete Streets Guidelines, and working knowledge of MUTCD, and relevant AASHTO and FHWA guidelines, preferred.
  • Proficiency with Google Suite, Slack, and project management software.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job.
