Overview:

This is a provisional appointment.

Brief Job Description (essential functions of the job):

Under general supervision of the Commissioner of Inspectional Services and the immediate direction of the Supervisor of Mechanical Inspections, performs inspections of plumbing, gas, and fire protection installations for conformance with all applicable codes; inspects and tests water circulation, piping, fixtures, equipment and water storage systems.

Responsibilities:

  • These inspections will require a thorough knowledge of all relevant plumbing, gas, and fire protection (sprinkler) codes and ordinances.

  • These include, but are not limited to, the Massachusetts State Plumbing & Gas Fitting Code and its amendments, the International Mechanical Code, NFPA chapters 13, 72 and 101, as well as MGL chapter 148, section 26.
  • The inspector shall be responsible for examining structures within his jurisdiction for code compliance, including requiring reports of a condition he/she deems as a potentially unsafe condition and reporting same to his/her superiors.
  • Examines plans for plumbing systems and advises builders and plumbers.
  • Issues permits for installation, alteration, and repairs.
  • In addition, the position requires response to inquiries or investigation of complaints for violations of said codes and prosecution through the legal system when necessary, issues orders for correction, and maintains the necessary records. Responsible for recording daily work assignments and retaining records relative to his/her duties.
  • Performs related work as required.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • Applicant must possess a current and valid Journeyman's or Master Plumber's License issued by the Massachusetts Board of Examiners of Plumbers and Gasfitters.
  • The inspector must acquire the required training hours to maintain or renew his/her license(s).
  • Must have a minimum of five (5) years of experience as a licensed practitioner in the plumbing, gas fitting, and /or fire protection field. 
  • A thorough knowledge of the Massachusetts State Plumbing & Gas Fitting Code and its amendments, the International Mechanical Code, NFPA chapters 13, 72, and 101, as well as MGL chapter 148, section 26.
  • Experience with all types (high-rise, commercial, and residential) and methods (masonry, steel, concrete, and wood) of construction is preferred.
  • Applicant must be able to read plans and specifications for conformance with the above codes.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job.
  • Familiarity with the Hansen software system and various computer programs is preferred.
  • Multi-lingual candidate is also preferred.
  • Valid Massachusetts driver's license and access to an automobile are required.
  • Applicants meeting the minimum qualifications will be considered for this position.
