Overview:

Under the direction of the Urban Wilds Program Manager or his/her designee, the Franklin Park Gardener Foreperson supervises and participates in landscape maintenance and restoration of the Franklin Park natural areas. 

 

Work includes routine seasonal landscape maintenance, assistance with the development and execution of landscape restoration projects, oversight of volunteer-based and youth landscape stewardship projects, and support for program outreach and education.

Responsibilities:

  • Performs routine seasonal landscape maintenance (including but not limited to pruning, raking, weeding, mulching, trail clearing and repair, pathway drainage repairs, and erosion control).
  • Performs landscape restoration (including but not limited to planting, invasive plant identification and removal, woodlands restoration, and bank stabilization.
  • Assists in developing scopes of work and in monitoring contracted work relating to wetland delineations, restoration planting, signage, and fencing work.
  • Provides administrative support for program progress reports, educational/outreach materials, and communications with Franklin Park constituent groups.
  • Provides instruction for seasonal and support staff or volunteers in best practices for landscape care and maintenance.

  • Performs related work as required.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • Applicants must have at least three (3) years of experience in work related to general landscape maintenance in public or private service, and one (1) year must have been in a supervisory capacity.
  • Ecology, environmental science, horticulture, and/or natural resource management background is helpful.
  • Experience in natural areas management is helpful.
  • Must have excellent communication skills.
  • Must have and maintain a current Massachusetts Driver's License.
  • Must obtain a valid Hoisting License within six (6) months of the date of hire.
  • Must obtain Chainsaw Safety Training Certification within (12) months of the date of hire.
  • Must obtain a valid Herbicide Applicator License within twelve (12) months of the date of hire.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job.
