Receives, records, and processes all payments of taxes and various municipal assessments. Verifies the accuracy of interest computed on delinquent tax bills.
Responsibilities:
In the absence of the manager, has responsibility for the safe custody, recording, and balancing of all monies received by the Collecting Division to be deposited with the City Treasurer.
In the absence of the manager, has responsibility for the supervision of the Tellers and related function(s).
Assists in the training of new staff as needed.
Uses strong customer service skills when providing information regarding the payment of real estate, personal property, motor vehicle, and boat taxes to the public and other City employees via written correspondence, personal (on-site), and telephone inquiries.
Answers questions asked by taxpayers regarding taxes, licenses, and departmental regulations.
Receives and processes payments for taxes, fees, bills, and other payments and prepares and issues receipts.
Balances the total monies against the total of tax bills received for payment on a daily basis.
Prepares daily collection sheets totaling the amount of checks, cash, and other instruments of payment received.
Reconciles tax receipts between multiple payment platforms.
Reverses nonnegotiable payments and notifies the appropriate party.
Receipts tax bills and various other municipal assessment bills for all monies deposited.
Inspects all money carefully to note counterfeit bills and spurious coins.
Researches and resolves answers to customer’s complex questions or discrepancies, forwarding only unusual items to the supervisor.
Maintains up-to-date billing system, follow-ups on the allocation of payments, and reconciles accounts.
Researches and processes exception-based payments through Lockbox processing.
Investigates and resolves customer queries and process adjustments.
Receipts tax bills and various other municipal assessment bills for all monies deposited.
Prepare other departmental deposits, such as traffic and parking deposits.
Performs related work as required.
Minimum Entrance Qualifications:
Minimum of three (3) years full-time, or equivalent part-time,professional experience in accounting, auditing, or related field, with a concentration in customer service and collections.
An associate's degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or a related field is preferred and may be substituted for a maximum of one (1) year of experience. A bachelor's degree in the above-named field may be substituted for two (2) years of the required experience.
Thorough knowledge of the various municipal taxes and municipal assessments and revenue.
Knowledge of laws, policies, and procedures pertaining to the Boston Treasury Department, Collecting Division. Knowledge of business math.
Skill in operating an adding machine and calculator.
Ability to deal effectively with the public.
Knowledge of the MUNIS Tax Billing and Collection System and iNovah Cashiering System.
Knowledge of automated debit/credit card systems.
Knowledge of various office equipment, including but not limited to check endorsers and imagers.
Proficient in Microsoft Office and Google Suite preferred.
Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job.
