This is a provisional appointment.

 

The Public Facilities Department (PFD) provides professional project management services for design and construction projects at City-owned buildings throughout Boston. We work in conjunction with and on behalf of user agencies by managing renovation or new construction projects at buildings where City services are delivered. PFD manages a range of projects valued between $1M - $125M and typically handles an overall caseload of between 80-100 projects valued at more than $500M annually.

 

Brief job Description (Essential Functions):

 

Under the direction of an Assistant Director within the Public Facilities Department, the Senior Project Manager (Sr. PM) is responsible for managing major building projects from inception through design, construction, and turnover of the facility. The Sr. PM manages the largest (over $20,000,000) and most highly technical projects for the City of Boston, as well as other projects as required.

Responsibilities:

  • Manages the overall project delivery process.
  • Negotiates with and manages architect(s), engineer(s), and contractor(s)’ contracts and performance.
  • Manages project finances, budget, schedule, and quality.
  • Serves as point of contact for user agencies, elected officials, and community members/constituents.
  • Manages preparation and review of project designs, plans, and specifications.
  • Manages all project documentation and inputting and tracking in departmental information systems.
  • Coordinates with administrative and regulatory agencies.
  • Manages staffing of projects.
  • Manages project-related equipment procurement, installation, and inventory.
  • Assists in the development of project scopes and budgets.
  • Participates in the improvement of departmental policies and procedures as they relate to project delivery.
  • Performs related work as required.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • At least five (5) years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, professional experience in building project management, construction management, engineering, or architecture is required. Additional experience in engineering or architectural registration or major construction projects is highly preferred. A bachelor’s degree in a related field is preferred and may be substituted for two (2) years of the required experience. 
  • Appropriate educational substitutions may be made.
  • Familiarity with MA Public Procurement laws is preferred. MCPPO designation preferred.
  • Success managing projects with a total value of over $15MM and a single project of over $20MM preferred.
  • Experience working with permitting and oversight agencies preferred.
  • Knowledge of MA building code and generally accepted construction trade practices.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and to exercise sound independent judgment in planning, directing, and coordinating projects.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job.
