Overview:

The City of Boston Office of Youth Engagement and Advancement (OYEA) is seeking Mayor's Youth Council Program Coordinators to manage the facilitation of the day-to-day functions of both the Boston Mayor's Youth Council and the City of Boston Participatory Budgeting Process known as the Youth Lead the Change (YLC) program. These positions will provide direction to three young adult positions, helping to ensure the ongoing success of both civic engagement programs within the Office.

 

The Mayor's Youth Council Program Coordinators are responsible for engaging youth, young adults, youth-serving organizations, and city departments through facilitating and administering both MYC and YLC programs. These positions are for high-energy individuals and require a candidate to be a self-starter who has experience or interest in youth civic engagement, urban planning, project management, capital planning, and or government relations to serve to engage youth in participatory budgeting.

Responsibilities:

The Mayor's Youth Council Program Coordinators report to the Assistant Director of OYEA. Important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

 

Mayor's Youth Council Program Management

  • Provides direction to a team of three specialists, helping to manage the day-to-day functions of the Council.
  • Manages the facilitation and support of all council meetings.
  • Develop, manage, and conduct outreach and engagement initiatives for program development and management.
  • Work to build partnerships with neighborhoods, youth, community groups, organizations, and city departments for the Council.
  • Assist committee members in developing projects and initiatives for the Council year.

Youth Lead the Change Project Management

  • Manages the implementation of the Youth Lead the Change Participatory Budgeting process.
  • Ensures youth engagement and youth voice are at the forefront of all YLC project proposals through implementation.
  • Supports the Youth Lead the Change Youth Committee during all steps of the process.
    • Writing the Rules, Idea Collection, Drafting Proposals, Feasibility Analysis, Vote Fest, Project Implementation.
    • Supports YLC Change Agents in leading program design and engagement.
    • Supports the YLC Advisory Committee.
  • Ensures that response to youth and public questions, needs, or concerns is prompt and accurate.
  • Maintains current knowledge of youth needs, concerns, goals, and opportunities through project development.
  • Performs related work as required.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • Applicants must have one to two (1-2) years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, professional experience working with youth.
  • Supervisory experience is a plus.
  • A high school diploma or equivalent, a bachelor’s degree, is preferred.
  • Ability to create, develop, and coordinate programs.
  • Track record of collaborating with youth leaders and volunteers.
  • Ability to engage diverse communities.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, with city staff, community partners, teachers, youth, and media.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and work on multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining attention to detail is required.
  • Familiarity with Boston youth service providers is preferred.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft applications and Google Suite.
  • Bilingual preferred (Spanish, Haitian Creole, Cape Verdean Creole, Chinese, and Vietnamese).
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job.
