Brief Job Description (essential functions of the job):

 

Under the supervision of the Supt. of Bridge Maintenance and Operations and/or a Drawtender of a bridge, is in charge of and operates the drawbridge for the passing of watercraft.

Responsibilities:

  • Supervises and participates in the maintenance of the drawbridge and related appurtenances and performs related work as required. 
  • May open and close drawbridge gates to block traffic when the drawbridge is to be opened. 
  • Keeps the drawhouse clean and in orderly condition. 
  • Keeps a log of movements of navigation through the drawspan of the bridge, and performs related work as required.
  • Cleans snow and ice from drawbridge and appurtenances.
  • Must be physically able to climb ladders and enter confined spaces of bridge components as required.

Must be available to work any shift on a 24-hour per day, seven days per week continuous operation at any assigned bridge location. 

 

A continuous operation is one in which there is regularly scheduled employment for twenty-four hours a day and for seven days a week. The days of work can be any day from Sunday through Saturday. All shifts will consist of a forty (40) hour work week. The hours of duty may be fixed or at the discretion of the Superintendent. Must be flexible to cover open/vacant shifts. A minimum of 48 hours' notice will be given for a shift change.

 

Required to work any emergency as directed by the Chief of Streets or designee.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • Applicants must have at least one (1) year of related work experience.
  • Working knowledge of the operation and maintenance of electrical machinery and equipment used in relation to movable bridges is preferred, as is knowledge of rules, regulations, and signals governing the operation of movable bridges and lighting of such bridges in Boston Harbor and adjacent waters. 
  • Ability to deal effectively with others and to be alert at all times when on duty also prefer.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job.
  • Must have and maintain a current Massachusetts driver's license.
