The Innovation and Technology Cabinet is seeking a Communications Coordinator to lead its messaging and storytelling both externally to constituents and internally to other departments across the city and across teams within the cabinet. This happens through ongoing monitoring of the news cycle, production of written material, planning of events, both internal and external, and interdepartmental coordination and collaboration. This position reports to the Chief of Staff and will work collaboratively with the CIO, Central Team, and all relevant departmental staff, as well as staff from various departments throughout the City of Boston.

Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the Office’s Public Information Officer, managing all media relations for the department.
  • In partnership with leadership, draft and edit talking points, articles, blogs, and other written materials for approval by the Chief of Staff.
  • Develop messaging content and design for promotional materials related to the Cabinet’s initiatives.
  • Create consistent internal communications (e.g., newsletters, meeting summaries) highlighting departmental and team achievements, with reported metrics and visual communications oversight.
  • Coordinate department-wide meetings and regular internal communications.
  • Assist the Chief of Staff with administrative tasks supporting the central team and department.
  • Pitch news stories to local and national news outlets, including trade publications.
  • Coordinate print production and communication initiatives with the City of Boston’s Press Office.
  • Manage community outreach opportunities, including coordination of events, speakers, invitations, press release distribution, and logistics within the Cabinet and with the Cabinet’s partner departments.
  • Support the development of promotional inventory, displays, and materials.
  • Develop a partnership framework to enhance innovation and technology relationships, communication, outreach, and collaboration efforts.
  • Collaborate with city departments, government agencies, and non-profits to advocate for technology users’ perspectives and needs in projects and initiatives.
  • Deliver clear messages through various communication channels.
  • Perform related duties as required.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • Minimum of three (3) years of full-time or equivalent part-time professional experience in marketing, strategic communications, web content management, or media/public relations.
  • Bachelor's degree in communications, public relations, marketing, or a related field preferred; may substitute two (2) years of relevant experience.
  • Proficiency in Google Suite, Microsoft Office, and Adobe Creative Suite or Canva; familiarity with web content management systems (e.g., Drupal, Wordpress) highly preferred.
  • Familiarity with current communication trends and popular social media platforms is preferred.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with an emphasis on clarity and effectiveness.
  • Strong project management skills, including the ability to manage multiple projects, work under pressure, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment with all levels of management and the general public.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to exercise good judgment as required by the job.
  • The position may require occasional evening and weekend hours.
