Overview:

Brief Job Description:

The City of Boston Law Department provides legal services to the Mayor, City Council, and City departments regarding their official capacities within the City government. Our office has been in continuous existence for 180 years and under the sole authority of the Corporation Counsel for 125 years. The Corporation Counsel has supervisory authority over all City attorneys and legal affairs and is responsible for all litigation to which the City of Boston is a party.

Under the direction of the Corporation Counsel and the supervision of the Legal Advisor, the City of Boston seeks a Paralegal to provide support to the Boston Public Facilities Department (PFD) and Public Facilities Commission (PFC) Legal team. The Paralegal will research points of law, write legal memoranda, compile documents, file, and perform such other duties as assigned.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Prepares documents and cases necessary for specific court hearings. Prepare documents and research legal issues on cases and in preparation for court proceedings.
  • Sorts, analyzes, organizes, and archives data pertaining to PFD/PFC matters and cases.
  • Updates and supports the PFD/PFC Legal team via reports and other correspondence specific to the issues and cases.
  • Assists in drafting legal motions, discovery requests, witness preparation, trial preparations, and court proceedings.
  • Attends meetings with members of the PFD/PFC Legal team and assists in responding to any inquiries. Assist in administrative review and tasks pertaining to contracts, change orders, and amendments.
  • Assists in administrative review and tasks pertaining to PFC vote requests. Maintain a positive working relationship with the City, courts, and other parties as directed.
  • Responds promptly and appropriately to requests for assistance on additional projects. Be receptive to new ideas and respond to changing conditions and departmental needs.
  • Perform related work as required.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree preferred.
  • Studying toward a Juris Doctorate Degree is a plus.
  • Accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Highly motivated self-starter.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office and Westlaw which is a plus.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, oral, and written communication skills.
