THIS IS A TEMPORARY, GRANT FUNDED POSITION FOR APPROXIMATELY (8) MONTHS.

 

Brief Job Description (essential functions of the job):

 

The Environment Department is hiring an Energy Advocate who can identify, inform, and guide community members who are likely to benefit from Mass Save energy efficiency programs. The Energy Advocate will collaborate with All In Energy, utility partners, Mass Save program vendors, and colleagues in other City departments to raise awareness of Mass Save programs and help deliver energy efficiency and clean energy benefits for residents in the program’s neighborhoods of focus. The Energy Advocate will be supervised by the Carbon Neutrality Project Manager. As part of their onboarding, the successful candidate will receive training on Mass Save program offerings and community engagement approaches in the City of Boston.

Responsibilities:

  • Conducts in-person and digital outreach to Boston residents and small businesses in the four priority neighborhoods to raise awareness of and increase participation in Mass Save programs. 
  • Actively communicates with community members to guide them through the application process and facilitate communication with stakeholders to address program participation barriers.
  • Develops and implements a community-based social marketing campaign to promote community-wide behavioral change by collaborating across a diverse group of partners.
  • Identifies, attends, and tables or presents at community events.
  • Assists community members who need support and guidance to enroll in Mass Save programs.
  • Tracks and records barriers to program participation in collaboration with utility partners.
  • Supports coordination between program vendors and community members to increase program participation rates.
  • Attends biweekly meetings with All In Energy and program partners.
  • Participates in trainings provided through the Community First Partnership.
  • Submits reports to All In Energy to support tracking and exploring solutions to program participation barriers.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

 

  • Two (2) years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience in customer service, community organizing, and/or community outreach. A bachelor's degree in a related field may be substituted for two (2) years of the required experience.
  • Strong interest in working to achieve Boston's climate goals
  • Strong verbal, written, and presentation skills for communicating with a diverse audience
  • Comfortable communicating with a variety of residents, small business owners, and other stakeholders in person, by phone, & over email.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills with attention to detail and ability to handle multiple and diverse tasks.
  • Familiarity with built environment, community development, energy burden, energy efficiency, environmental justice, and Mass Save programs preferred.
  • Fluency in English and at least one of Boston's major spoken languages (e.g., Spanish, Haitian Creole, Vietnamese, Cape Verdean Creole) is strongly preferred. 
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively as part of a team 
  • Energy, creativity, and entrepreneurship. 
  • Experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Proficient computer skills with prior experience using MS Suite, Adobe, and ArcGIS are strongly preferred. 
  • Ability to work offsite and after hours, occasionally on weekends, as needed and with advance notice.
  • Candidates with a strong knowledge of Boston neighborhoods will be preferred. 
  • Commitment to advancing social justice and equity in the City of Boston to improve the lives of all residents.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job. 

A current Massachusetts driver's license is preferred.
