Overview:

Under general supervision, the Senior Assistant Registrar maintains and updates resident and voter lists, processes absentee and early voting requests and ballots, certifies nomination and initiative petition papers, and answers public inquiries regarding the election process.

Responsibilities:

  • Assists with conducting elections, voter registration, annual listings (census), and special projects. 
  • Assists, as needed, in preparing materials for use at the polls during elections.  
  • Assists, as needed, with transportation, delivery, and set-up of Election Day equipment at polling locations.
  • Assists as needed with absentee & early voting operations; assignments include processing and filing requests and ballots. Additional tasks involve maintaining and preparing accepted ballots for delivery and further processing, all while upholding the integrity and confidentiality of the vote-by-mail operation.
  • Assists, as needed, in certifying nomination papers and initiative petition papers.
  • Responds to inquiries from the general public, candidates, and elected officials regarding the election process. 
  • Reviews work performed by subordinates, as needed.
  • Performs all tasks of an Assistant Registrar. 
  • Performs other related tasks as determined by the Head Assistant Registrar of Voters, the Floor Manager, and/or the Absentee/Early Voting Voting Manager.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • At least three (3) years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, professional experience as an Assistant Registrar of Voters or related work, preferably in work that included team leadership experience. 
  • A High School Diploma or GED is required. An accredited college or university degree may be substituted for two (2) years of experience, and an Associate's Degree may be substituted for one (1) year of the required experience.
  • Must be detail-oriented and possess good communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to follow complex instructions and to communicate effectively with fellow employees and the general public.
  • Familiarity with the City of Boston, Massachusetts, and Federal laws and regulations affecting voter registration, election administration, voting, and jury lists. Knowledge of Boston City neighborhoods, wards, and precincts is preferred.
  • Familiarity with processing work in an election environment, including but not limited to candidates, nomination papers, absentee ballots, voter registration forms, and annual listing forms.
  • Must be proficient in the use of computer technology, including but not limited to Microsoft Office and Google Workspace. Familiarity with the Massachusetts Voter Registration Information System (VRIS) is preferred.
  • Must be able to work flexible shifts during the election and listing periods.
  • Bilingual ability is a plus.
  • Must be a registered voter in the city of Boston (M.G.L., Chapter 51, section 25). 
  • Possess and maintain a valid Massachusetts driver's license.
