Brief Job Description (essential functions of the job):


The Engineering Division is responsible for the attainment of a State of Good Repair (SOGR) and multi-modal functionality of an asset portfolio in excess of $6.2 Billion, including forty (40) bridges and eight hundred (800) miles of roadway.

 

Under the direct supervision of the Principal Civil Engineer, Design Section, and Engineering Division, the Assistant Civil Engineer is responsible for performing engineering duties that support the Public Works Department’s mission of maintaining, enhancing, and evolving the public rights of way in the city of Boston. Undertakes is responsible for any assigned design engineering work required for or related to the preparation and completion of all preliminary and final engineering designs, plans, detail designs, and calculations for the construction or reconstruction of streets, sewers, water mains, and related installations in the city of Boston.

Responsibilities:

  • Designs construction or reconstruction details for streets, sewers, sidewalks, ramps, street lights, storm drains, water mains, and related Public Works improvements. 
  • Prepares maps as required, for establishing snow plowing routes, snow removal areas, sanding routes, street cleaning and trash collecting routes. 
  • Where required by the immediate supervisor, reviews and checks any related design work that may be performed for the Division by outside engineering firms or consultants authorized by the Division City Engineer or the Chief of Streets. 
  • Performs other related design engineering services as may be required by the Principal Civil Engineer, Design Section. 
  • Performs related work as required.

Required to work any emergency as directed by the Chief of Streets or designee.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • Applicants must have at least (A) three (3) years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, technical or professional experience in civil engineering work in such areas as construction, survey, design, transportation, structural, drafting, or highway, of which (B) at least one (1) year must have been in a professional capacity.
  • Civil Engineering principles, practices, foundations, materials of construction, methods of construction, and terminology applicable to the design of highway, sewer, water, and related public improvements; must be proficient in the use of AutoCAD.Bachelors preferred.
  • Design engineering principles, standards and practices applicable to the layout and detail design required for the construction of highways, sewers, and water, and related public improvements.
  • A degree in Civil Engineering is strongly preferred. Bachelors preferred. EIT designation is strongly desired.

  • Applicants must also possess the ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job.

Working Knowledge of:

  • Mathematics, mechanics, soil mechanics, and hydraulics are applicable to the solution of diversified design engineering problems.
  • General survey and construction requirements related to the design of highways, sewer, water, and other public improvements, including general knowledge of construction materials.

Marked Ability to:

  • Apply stated engineering knowledge and experience to the solution of diversified design engineering problems.
  • Prepare clear and concise engineering reports.
