Overview:

Reporting to the Accounting Manager, the Senior Accountant is responsible for the reconciliation of the City’s payroll and retirement accounts, ensuring that the City’s various account cash balances reconcile with actual month-end bank balances. The position will be responsible for identifying accounting and bank errors by providing explanations of the differences between the accounting records' cash balance and the bank balance position per the bank statement. The Senior Accountant is responsible for the preparation of tax forms as well as tax audits.

Responsibilities:

  • Preparing Tax Forms for federal and state withholding tax.
  • Researching tax laws and advising on best practices and emerging issues.
  • Assisting in IRS and state audits and responding to tax correspondence.
  • Staying updated with the latest tax laws.
  • Review all detailed financial analysis of IRS submissions to research and develop strategies to defend client’s position while considering their specific goals.
  • Negotiate tax resolutions on behalf of the City of Boston with the IRS and other government entities.
  • Maintain a detailed file of information communicated to the IRS and other government agencies on claims and submissions to capture claim status, i.e., IRS, MA-DOR, Social Security, SAM.gov.
  • Assist with payroll system tax upgrades, overpayments, underpayments, and tax classes.
  • Compile and process the City’s W2s and 1099s, getting balances ready for year-end.
  • Prepare monthly bank reconciliation reports and aid in daily balancing.
  • Perform the reconciliation and verification of accounts regarding cash at hand and cash at the bank.
  • Reconcile transactions that are complex in nature, and resolve discrepancies.
  • Reconcile a diverse set of general ledger balance sheet accounts.
  • Continuously follow up on all reconciling items and provide regular updates to the Accounting Manager.
  • Manage a set of complex bank account transactions with large volumes of incoming and outgoing payments.
  • Create queries pertaining to accounting and researching payroll data.
  • Maintain documentation for the purpose of supporting files, reports, and data.
  • File prepared accounts in a well-organized manner.
  • Assist in various administrative duties that are determined necessary to support the department.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • Four (4) years of experience required.
  • A bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, business, public administration or a related field can be substituted for two (2) years of the required experience. Experience in tax accounting is a plus.
  • Solid knowledge of tax laws and regulations.
  • Strong understanding of bank operations, financial transactions, financial record keeping, audits, and accounting functions.
  • Understanding of general accounting principles and practices.
  • Strong comprehension of financial statements, reports, accounting ledgers, and journals.
  • Excellent oral and written communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on details as required by the job.
  • Perform detailed work accurately and promptly.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Suite.
  • Experience in PeopleSoft and iNovah is a plus.
  • Ability to work in a diverse environment and communicate effectively with the remainder of the Treasury team.

BOSTON RESIDENCY REQUIRED

This is an in-office position.
