Overview:

The City of Boston Department of Youth Employment and Opportunity is seeking a Youth Outreach & Engagement Coordinator to manage and coordinate the day-to-day outreach, communications and engagement strategies and functions of the department.

Under direction from the Director of Youth Employment and Opportunity, the Youth Outreach Coordinator will be responsible for overseeing the coordination and implementation of YEO outreach events, projects, initiatives and services for the department. 

The position is designed for a motivated individual with strong communication, organization, and research skills and a passion for building internal and external relationships. Additionally, strong interest/experience with high-level use of civic technology and public relations efforts. This role will be responsible for engaging youth constituents and connecting them to programs, resources, and work opportunities and coordinating all outreach and engagement public relations projects & materials to accomplish the goals of the department.

The Youth Outreach Coordinator reports directly to the Senior Manager of Engagement & Outreach.

Responsibilities:

Important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

 

  • Provides oversight and ensures effective resolutions or referrals of constituent requests on a variety of issues, e.g., employment, education, civic engagement, housing, health, social and emotional well-being, etc.
  • Oversees and supports web page and social media development, campaign, and content management.
  • Maintains regular communication with City of Boston 311 constituent service representatives to coordinate follow-up responses and services for YEO-related inquiries. 
  • Drafts, codes, and publishes the Department e-newsletters that go out to over 20,000 constituents.
  • Works with the Senior Manager of Engagement & Outreach to coordinate community-wide engagement outreach and awareness of YEO  and youth-related services.
  • Fills community and constituent outreach requests and needs.
  • Coordinate and schedule community jobs, resource fairs, and outreach projects.
  • Manages youth and constituent list services.
  • Develops content and graphic design of publication materials and distribution of materials. Creates flyers, brochures, videos, tutorials, and materials to assist youth in connecting to services and jobs.
  • Collaborates with city departments, other government agencies, and non-profit service providers to ensure the perspective and needs of youth are considered in various projects, programs, or initiatives.
  • Keeps current on municipal, state, and federal programs pertaining to youth to ensure appropriate referrals can be made.
  • Supports in supervising teen employees, interns, and volunteers schedules and tasks.
  • As needed, supports and participates in general youth engagement and employment activities, events, and special projects.
  • Performs related work as determined by the Senior Manager of Engagement & Outreach and/or the Director of YEO or delegate.
  • Performs related work as required.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

Qualifications:

  • Applicants must have three (3) years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, professional experience working with youth in an administrative capacity required. Some supervisory experience is preferred.
  • A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university is strongly preferred and may be substituted for two (2) years of the required experience.
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher) and social media is required.
  • Proficiency with Google Suite.
  • Good mediation, facilitation, and listening skills are required.
  • Good oral and written English skills required.
  • Computer coding and website design experience preferred.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining attention to detail is required.
  • Familiarity with Boston youth service providers is preferred.
  • Previous training and facilitation skills are preferred.
  • Considerable internet research skills are preferred.
  • Strong writing, editing, and word processing skills are preferred.
  • Ability to work some evenings and weekends required.
  • Fluency in Spanish or Cape Verdean Creole is highly preferred.

Work Environment & Physical Demands: Essential functions are performed in both office and community-based settings. Position requires some travel to attend meetings, conduct outreach, and coordinate events. Applicant's with driver's licenses are preferred.
