Overview:

Broadband and internet connectivity are essential for the 21st century. But for too many of our residents and businesses, service could be faster, cheaper, and more available. Fast broadband is vital to economic and educational opportunities; it connects our world-class universities and hospitals and is the engine that powers our digital economy. We need to improve broadband in the City of Boston, and we need someone to help drive the effort. The City is open to all solutions, from stimulating the private market to building public broadband infrastructure.

The City of Boston’s Department of Innovation and Technology (DoIT) is hiring a Digital Equity Project Coordinator to join the team that creates policy and planning initiatives to increase broadband affordability and availability, providing all Boston residents with the skills and resources they need to connect. This role will report directly to the Senior Digital Equity Manager and will join the team led by the Digital Equity Officer and Director of Broadband and Cable.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead project planning and coordination for digital equity projects, ensuring alignment with the city's broadband affordability and availability goals.
  • Spearhead administrative tasks associated with digital equity projects, including maintaining documentation, developing policies, and record-keeping.
  • Actively engage with local stakeholders, including government entities, businesses, and public institutions, to understand and address their digital connectivity needs and goals.
  • Collaborate with city staff in agencies involved in digital equity efforts, such as the Equity and Inclusion Cabinet, Boston Public Schools, and Boston Housing Authority, among others.
  • Organize and execute public outreach events focused on digital equity and DoIT initiatives, enhancing community engagement and participation.
  • Represent the city in local and national discussions on broadband policy, advocating for solutions that increase digital accessibility for Boston residents.
  • Contribute to research and formulation of strategies to enhance broadband services.
  • Oversee and support small teams of interns and fellows, providing guidance and mentorship in digital equity projects and initiatives.
  • Perform related work as required.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • Associate's degree from an accredited college or university, with at least four (4) years of relevant professional experience.
  • Bachelor's degree in Urban Planning, Information Technology, Public Policy or a related field may substitute for two (2) years of experience.
  • Relevant professional experience in government, advocacy, or non-profit sectors, particularly in policy development related to digital equity, may substitute for education.
  • Independent and efficient project management capabilities, with minimal supervision required.
  • Exceptional written, verbal, and presentation skills, with the ability to communicate complex technical topics to diverse audiences.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of broadband technologies and a keen understanding of the evolving broadband policy landscape.
  • Strong organizational skills with a creative and entrepreneurial approach to problem-solving.
  • Experience in digital skills training programs is a plus.

Desired Competencies:

  • Proficiency in office productivity software, such as Microsoft Office or Google Suite.
  • Ability to work under tight deadlines in high-pressure environments, with effective multitasking and time management skills.
  • High attention to detail, with the capacity to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team.
  • Knowledge of Boston’s diverse neighborhoods and existing Digital Equity work.

Preferred but Not Required Skills:

  • Bilingual, or ability to speak and understand another language besides English proficiently.
  • Knowledge of project management and communication tools such as Jira and Slack.
