Overview:

This is a Labor Service Position.

 

Brief Job Description (essential functions of the job):

 

Under general supervision, performs installation, maintenance, repair, and related work on street lighting units, flood lighting units, underpass and overpass lighting, bridge and general area lighting; repairs and maintains gas lamps.

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the proper handling and disposal of toxic materials.
  • Responsible for the care, custody, and maintenance of floodlights on the outside of bridges.
  • Operates all types of equipment necessary for maintenance, repair, and installation of lighting services.
  • Performs related work as required.

The City and the AFSCME Union acknowledge the ongoing technological changes in the panel board and that employees will attend required training sessions due to such changes.

 

Required to work any emergency as directed by the Commissioner of Public Works

 

Must be available to work the 3:30 p.m. to Midnight shift, or as assigned.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • Applicants must have at least two (2) years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, paid experience in electrical work. Two (2) years of vocational training may be substituted for work experience.
  • Massachusetts Commercial Driver's license (CDL) and Hoisting license preferred. Must be able to obtain CDL and Hoisting licenses within the first six (6) months of work.
  • Must have the ability to exercise good judgment and be able to focus on detail as required by the job.
  • Employees in this position must wear safety equipment provided by the City, including work boots (no sneakers), vests, respirators, earplugs, safety helmets, or other necessary safety equipment. Failure to comply with this requirement will result in progressive discipline up to and including termination.
  • Employees in this position are subject to a dress code that prohibits tank tops and shorts and requires that they wear long pants. Failure to comply with this dress code will result in progressive discipline up to and including termination.
