Overview:

Basic Function:

 

Under supervision and within the framework of Library policies and practices, to assume responsibility for the effective execution of the Library’s program of service to the general public with emphasis on young adults and to perform professional work requiring the application of substantial professional knowledge and experience.

 

Reports to:       Ranking staff member.

 

Supervises:      As assigned, professional and non-professional staff members.

Responsibilities:

Typical Duties and Responsibilities:

 

  • Initiates, plans, and implements the Library’s programs of service to the general public, with emphasis on young adults, through personal consultations, reference, and readers’ advisory services and programs.
  • Develops and implements activities to stimulate the use of the Library’s resources by the community, especially through schools and other agencies that serve young adults.
  • Develops and implements programs for young adults.
  • Performs difficult and involved reference work.
  • Has responsibility for the development of the young adult book collection.
  • Compiles annotated lists and bibliographies involving book and non-book materials.
  • May assist in recommending and/or planning changes in services or new services for young adults.
  • Assists in training professional and non-professional staff.
  • Performs other related and comparable duties as assigned.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications

 

  • A bachelor’s degree from a recognized college or university and a master’s degree in library and information science from an accredited library school. Courses in young adult literature and/or work taken for credit at an accredited library school. In exceptional instances, specialized education, training, and/or experience may be substituted for part or all of the educational requirements.
  • Two years of pertinent professional experience or any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training sufficient to indicate ability to do the work.
  • Broad knowledge of Library policies, practices, and procedures.
  • Extensive knowledge of young adults’ literature and work.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of programming techniques for young adults.
  • Demonstrated interest in young adults and in library work with young adults.
  • Demonstrated a willingness to assume responsibility and to carry out assignments independently.
  • Proven oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work well with staff and the public; initiative, dependability, good judgment, tact, and courtesy.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job.
  • CORI - Must successfully clear a Criminal Offenders Record Information check with the City of Boston.
