Overview:

This position works with BPL staff throughout the organization to ensure equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility principles remain at the forefront of service delivery, including collections, programming, outreach, partnerships, and procurement. Initiates and maintains positive working relationships with various library departments to understand their goals and enable their success. Draws on experience, data, and feedback to support, facilitate, and communicate EDI projects and policies throughout BPL.

Responsibilities:

  • Supports staff at all levels of the organization in their development of equitable, diverse, inclusive, and accessible programs, services, projects, and initiatives. Acts as an internal consultant using EDI expertise to identify opportunities to reach diverse audiences, and to provide equitable participation in our programs, services, and collections.
  • Works with a variety of public service teams on EDI program analysis and targeted outreach at the branch, central, and systemwide levels.
  • Using demographic data and other information, assists front line staff in locating and defining communities and patrons which would benefit from additional outreach.
  • Assists in the evaluation and evolution of the Library’s EDI goals and projects. In coordination with the Leadership of the BPL, this position will assist with the development and maintenance of an overall project plan for institutional matters related to EDI programs and initiatives. Build and refine the Library’s Diversity Equity and Inclusion program through careful analysis and implementation of data, feedback, current trends, and best practices.
  • Identifies skills gaps and needs in the area of EDI skills. In coordination with the BPL Training team, recommends appropriate training and professional development opportunities.
  • In conjunction with the BPL Communications team, facilitates internal communication strategies around EDI topics using existing BPL communication modes and localized target audiences.
  • With Library management, reviews various policies and procedures with equity, diversity, and inclusion principles in mind. Stays abreast of emerging literature and assists in evaluating, recommending, and incorporating best practices for continued policy and workflow improvements.
  • Collaborates on the implementation of diversity audits for various library collections.
  • Suggests or identifies locations for job postings/recruitment.
  • Serves as a liaison to other City agencies on topics related to equity, diversity, and inclusion, including the Mayor’s Equity and Inclusion Cabinet, the Office of Language, Communications, and Access, and the Office of Community Engagement.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • Education and Experience - Bachelor’s degree from a recognized college or university. A master’s degree in library science or a related field is desirable. Examples of related fields include social work, public policy or public administration, education, or humanities. Five to  seven (5-7) years’ experience doing EDI work is required.  An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Professional maturity and collaborative approaches will be a hallmark of this position. Ability to maintain productive interpersonal relationships in a complex and changing environment. Contribute to/foster a team environment built on mutual trust, collaboration, communication, and shared responsibility.
  • Proven success in developing and implementing diversity strategies. Understanding of barriers to inclusion and strategies to overcome them.
  • Demonstrated knowledge, skills, and awareness of contemporary issues of diversity, equity, inclusion, and access.
  • Good judgement and discretion are essential.
  • Ability to prepare and analyze comprehensive reports and plans. Project management; ability to carry out projects to their completion. 
  • Proficiency in a language other than English is preferred.
  • CORI – must successfully clear a Criminal Offenders Record Information check with the City of Boston.
