Brief Job Description (essential functions of the job):

 

Reporting to the Commissioner of the Election Department, the Civic Engagement Coordinator develops and executes civic engagement strategies towards increasing census response, voter knowledge, voter participation in elections, and poll worker recruitment.

Responsibilities:

  • Develops and executes engagement strategies for the pre-registration of 16 and 17 year old residents in keeping with recent and future changes to Massachusetts’ voter registration laws.
  • Develops and implements engagement strategies focused on increasing the participation of voters with disabilities.
  • Develops and executes strategies to raise awareness of the city’s annual census and encourages residents to respond to that survey.
  • Manages the department’s web and digital presence in coordination with the Press Office.
  • Creates and disseminates outreach and communication content, which may include newsletters, brochures, blogs, flyers, public service announcements, and informational videos.
  • Assists with poll worker recruitment, communications, and events.
  • Serves as liaison to non-partisan voter advocacy organizations, and collaborates with the department’s Community Outreach Coordinator on community outreach strategies and activities.
  • Performs related pre and post election prep work as required.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • At least three (3) years of full time, or equivalent part time, experience in public relations, community relations, or related field. A bachelor’s degree in communications or related field is preferred and may be substituted for two (2) years of the required experience.
  • Must have the ability to deal effectively and courteously with the general public and various agencies.
  • Must possess strong computer skills and have proficient knowledge and experience using graphic design and desktop publishing software, as well as Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook programs.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and actively participate in community outreach events; to analyze and evaluate their effectiveness; to prepare and present statistical data and formal reports; to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; to establish and maintain positive working relationships with community organizations and the general public.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the position.
  • Must have and maintain a current MA driver’s license.
  • Must be flexible to work evenings and weekends during election and listing periods.
  • CORI check required.
