Overview:

The Mayor’s Office for Immigrant Advancement (MOIA) works to strengthen the ability of immigrants and Boston’s diverse cultural and linguistic communities to fully participate in the economic, civic, social, and cultural life of Boston. Under the direction of the Chief of Staff and in collaboration with the Mayor’s Press Office, the Strategic Communications Manager is responsible for: (1) preparing proactive messaging and educational materials for our city’s immigrant communities in the face of changing policies at the local and federal level, (2) designing communications campaigns that tell the real story of immigrants in Boston, (3) positioning the Mayor and MOIA as thought leaders on immigrant and immigration issues in the media, (4) effectively communicating the Mayor’s immigrant impact agenda, her administration’s accomplishments, and any other MOIA initiatives to our city’s diverse residents, and (5) designing outreach and community engagement strategies for MOIA programs and initiatives.

Responsibilities:

  • Develops outreach and community engagement campaigns and strategies around MOIA programs, which dovetail with MOIA’s communications strategy for these programs.
  • Leads and coordinates Mayor’s Immigrant-serving media outlets roundtable with the Mayor’s Press Office.
  • Supervises MOIA’s Outreach and Community Engagement Coordinator and 2 academic-year communications fellow.
  • Supervises and refines all MOIA community engagement initiatives, including MOIA monthly webinars, Immigrant Information Corners, MOIA 101 Presentations, participate in Community engagement events-resources fairs, and Mayor’s Quarterly Meetings with Immigrant Community Partners.
  • Works swiftly and collaboratively with the Mayor’s Press Office and Speechwriters to prepare Mayoral statements and talking points, and drafts citywide communication for residents on breaking federal immigration news.
  • Crafts proactive communication strategies, messaging, and/or educational campaigns for our city’s residents on any changes in the immigration landscape.
  • Identifies opportunities for the Mayor and MOIA to provide thought leadership on pertinent and emerging immigration issues and prepares messaging accordingly, advising on opportunities to host or participate in press conferences, distribute press statements, issue letters, or post on social media.
  • Designs and implements MOIA’s communication strategy to raise awareness and visibility of the Mayor’s immigrant impact agenda, MOIA’s priorities and key initiatives and accomplishments.
  • Builds strong relationship and closely coordinates all strategies, campaigns, and/or messaging with Mayor’s Press Office and the Director of Communications for the Equity and Inclusion Cabinet.
  • Drafts press releases and advisories, talking points, public-facing letters, and all external-facing communications for the Mayor, Equity and Inclusion Chief, MOIA Director, and other City staff on issues related to MOIA.
  • Actively engages, cultivates and manages press relationships to increase and ensure positive coverage of MOIA programs, public announcements, special events, and other projects.
  • Manages all of MOIA’s public-facing digital content, including website, email newsletter, and social media accounts, including those of the MOIA Director’s, to increase its public presence. Oversees the translation process relating to all citywide immigration communication.
  • Manages all MOIA public-facing outreach print materials, including MOIA brochure(s), one-pagers, flyers, and reports.
  • Manages MOIA’s archive of photos, press clippings, announcements, and other public-facing documents.
  • Creates content and coordinates input on infographics, etc. and newsletter that demonstrate the work, goals, and objectives of MOIA.
  • Promotes a culture of internal information sharing and collaborations by sharing intra-departmental information to ensure that all MOIA staff are informed and aware of citywide priorities.
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of MOIA’s communication strategies, using qualitative and quantitative feedback.
  • Attends events to represent MOIA, which will require evening and weekend participation.
  • Participates in regular office responsibilities, including phone coverage and constituent services.
  • Other assigned tasks as necessary.
  • Performs related duties as required.

 

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • A Master’s degree in the above-mentioned fields preferred and may be substituted for three (3) years of required experience.
  • Experience developing public awareness communications content for immigrant communities and in languages other than English.
  • Experience developing messaging for mainstream audiences on issues immigrants face and on issues of race, diversity, equity, inclusion.
  • Experience developing content for and implementing a messaging strategy to reframe a narrative that already exists in public discourse.
  • Experience integrating data and storytelling into communications content.
  • Multilingual and/or multicultural persons are strongly encouraged to apply.
  • Boston Residency Required.
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States.
