Overview:

Under direction, supervises employees of a lower grade in digging graves, installing vaults, gardening, and grounds care in city cemeteries.

Responsibilities:

All duties of a Grave Digger plus the following:

  • Ensures the cemetery grounds are properly maintained by supervising and performing tasks such as mowing, landscaping, and cleaning. This includes shoveling snow, raking leaves, and picking up broken branches, among other duties.
  • Supervises interments and removals, installation of concrete vaults and liners.
  • Leads the funeral to the proper destination in the cemeteries.
  • Supervises the backfilling of graves, lawn care, pruning, and planting in the cemeteries.
  • Maintains records pertaining to the sale of burial lots, interments, transfers, and burial lot maintenance contracts.
  • Ensures that all work adheres to local regulations and cemetery policies.
  • Oversees the maintenance and operation of tools and machinery used in cemetery upkeep.
  • Performs related work as required.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Applicants must have at least two (2) years of full-time or equivalent part-time experience in cemetery maintenance, construction, and repair work.
  • A minimum of one (1) year of supervisory experience is preferred.
  • Knowledge of the location of lots and graves in the Cemetery division is preferred.
  • Ability to supervise interments and removals, and make sure that the lots and graves are properly backfilled after an interment is preferred.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job.
  • Must have and maintain a valid Massachusetts driver's license.

BOSTON RESIDENCY REQUIRED
