Overview:

The Assistant Safety and Stewardship Manager is responsible for all aspects of the Library’s physical security and safety programs with direct day-to-day oversight of Security personnel, contracts, and procedures at all Library locations. The position is responsible for the management of a security systems program that includes security cameras, card access systems, and other physical security infrastructure. The purpose of the position is to deliver a secure and safe experience for patrons and staff while ensuring exhibitions and collections are maintained securely, balancing security, access, and the user experience. This position also assists in the supervision and maintenance of all library properties and the shipping and delivery system and works with outside groups and library staff in the implementation of public and private events and programs. The position assists with establishing system-wide safety and security procedures and improvement plans.

Responsibilities:

  • Coordinates and oversees all aspects of the Security operations of the Library at all locations, including security of shipping and delivery systems.
  • Is responsible for Security staffing and the performance of security personnel. Develops and implements requirements and procedures for the security department/teams. Provides direct oversight of security personnel and central and branch facilities.
  • Is responsible for security systems, including security procedures, card key access, and video camera systems, and works with IT, other library facilities departments, and City of Boston departments as necessary to ensure optimal functioning of same.
  • Monitors scheduled events and daily schedules, responds to emergency calls, reviews incidents, and provides training on library security procedures as needed.
  • Maintains incident and police reports and records and advises the Chief of Operations or designee of deficiencies and efforts to ameliorate deficiencies.
  • Hires, orients, and trains staff and/or contractors engaged in the operations of the department.
  • Compiles statistics and prepares operational and budgetary reports on departmental operations.
  • As directed, works with the Business Office to monitor the work of outside contractors.
  • Assists in the management of the Loading dock and associated procedures in support of library security and approved event schedules and vendors.
  • Assists in managing the BPL’s safety and fire control programs, including organizing fire drills and maintaining appropriate emergency manuals, signage, and egress. Responsible for interaction with fire and law enforcement officials during public events and programs. Represents the Library during emergencies while on duty.
  • Helps coordinate Systemwide safety procedures, evacuation procedures, and muster points, incident reporting, and disaster preparedness.
  • Works with Facilities staff to communicate in an effective and timely manner with all library staff regarding work of the department.
  • Liaison with city partners and service providers working in the areas of law enforcement, security, homelessness outreach, substance abuse outreach, and mental health services.
  • Serves as a member of the BPL’s Collections Security Team, providing strategic direction in all areas of collection security.
  • Responsible for compliance with laws, rules, and regulations related to surveillance and security practices.
  • Responsible for auditing security equipment and procedures to ensure they are working properly and serving their intended purpose.
  • Assists the Safety and Stewardship Program Manager and Facilities staff as directed.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • Education – A bachelor’s degree in Business Management, Security Management or related field from a recognized college or university. Advanced pertinent education desirable. In exceptional instances, specialized education, training and/or experience may be substituted for part or all of the educational requirements.
  • Experience –At least three (3) years of full-time or equivalent part-time, administrative, managerial experience in any one or combination of the following fields: law enforcement, public safety, facilities security, library or public service systems, events logistics management. At least two (2) years of experience in a supervisory capacity. Significant and substantial current experience in administering a comparable program of Security management.
  • Ability to balance library principles and best practices regarding security, access, safety, and the value of the user experience.
  • Ability to demonstrate vision, strategic thinking, collaboration and inclusive leadership skills, flexibility and adaptability, and willingness to embrace change.
  • Ability to recognize and set priorities and to use initiative and independent decision-making skills.
  • Ability to organize, direct, motivate, and evaluate security staff and contractors, mentor others, and foster a team environment.
  • Excellent communication, public speaking, and presentation skills are essential.
  • Other Requirements –
  • Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license.
  • The position’s schedule would be Tuesday-Saturday, with the possibility of evening work.
  • Must be able to respond to emergency calls during off-hours.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage a large number of employees in multiple locations.
  • Ability to develop and conduct training programs.
  • Working knowledge of security systems.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of email, word processing, spreadsheet, and project management software.
  • CORI – Must successfully clear a Criminal Offenders Record Information check with the City of Boston.
