Brief Job Description (essential functions of the job):


Under the direction of the Pavement Markings Supervisor, the Assistant Traffic Markings Supervisor supervises employees and performs work necessary for the installation and maintenance of traffic pavement markings, signs, delineators, and other traffic control devices in the public’s way. The Assistant Traffic Markings Supervisor supervises and supports the process and workflows of traffic marking maintenance and project management, including development and implementation of engineered plans and technical drawings, and ensures work is scheduled and completed in accordance with established priorities. The Assistant Pavement Markings supervisor shall utilize the City’s customer relations management and asset management systems to optimize workflows and identify operational efficiencies.

Responsibilities:

  • Develops and implements temporary traffic control plans and detours for work sites to safely facilitate road users through or around work zones.
  • Supervises and uses specialty equipment and tools used in the application of traffic marking paint and thermoplastic pavement markings, signs, delineators, and other traffic control devices.
  • Supervises and ensures pavement markings, signs, and delineators are installed in accordance with MUTCD standards, plans, and specifications.
  • Supervises work and reviews maintenance records of the work performed for data completeness and accuracy.
  • Interviews prospective candidates for unit vacancies and develops and performs on-site training for new unit employees.
  • Reviews and recommends specifications for unit supply and service contracts.
  • Identifies equipment, tools, and supplies for purchase and develops cleaning and maintenance schedules for vehicles, equipment, and tools required for the unit’s work.
  • Creates and updates asset data, work orders, and tasks in Cartegraph and implements periodic asset maintenance programs.
  • Assumes daily operations duties of the Pavement Marking Supervisor in their absence.
  • Performs related duties as required.

 

Required to work any emergency as directed by the Commissioner of Transportation or designee.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • At least three (3) years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience in the supervision, application, or installation of traffic marking paint and thermoplastic pavement markings is required, and experience with the installation of signs, delineators, and other traffic control devices is preferred. A bachelor's degree can be substituted for two (2) years of the required experience.
  • Working knowledge of the Cartegraph (OpenGov) asset management system is preferred. Proficiency in Microsoft Office and or Google Suite is required.
  • Ability to read and comprehend engineering drawings is required. Working knowledge of the City of Boston Traffic Rules and Regulations, MUTCD (Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices), and relevant AASHTO (American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials) and FHWA (Federal Highway Administration) guidelines.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required.


Willingness to work overnight shifts from May through November.


CERTIFICATE REQUIREMENT: Possession of Massachusetts Class D or higher Drivers License.
