Overview:

The mission of the City of Boston Assessing Department is to accurately collect data, assess property at its full and fair cash value, and provide prompt and courteous service to the public. The Assessing Department is a leader in municipal valuation and seeks to maintain that status by attracting talented experience to our core staffing.

 

Reports to the designated manager, reviews work, and provides direction and training to assessing staff.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Analyzes, describes, and appraises property of all types using mass appraisal techniques, including computerized methodology.
  • Prepares appraisals for submission to the Appellate Tax Board and presents testimony as necessary.
  • Serves as liaison to other units and oversees the provision of information to the public and other interested parties.
  • Manages projects and handles special assignments.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • At least four (4) years of professional experience in real estate appraisal or related field is required.
  • Professional designation - MAA, CMA, CAE (Mass. Accredited Assessor, Certified Mass. Assessor, Certified Assessment Evaluator), and/or college degree in business, public administration, or related field preferred.
  • At least one (1) year of supervisory experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to train and motivate staff preferred.
  • Demonstrated teamwork, interpersonal, and project management skills preferred.
  • Thorough knowledge of valuation methodology, including CAMA (computer-assisted mass appraisal) systems and appraisal of complex and/or specialized properties is preferred.
  • Ability to make presentations and communicate effectively with the public and coworkers is preferred.
  • Ability to prepare appraisal reports, management documents, analyses, and professional communications, including data and statistical information preferred.
  • Thorough knowledge of assessing operations and departmental standards and goals is preferred.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on details as required by the job.
  • A safe driving record and a valid Massachusetts driver’s license are required.

Terms:

Union/Salary Plan/Grade: AFSCME/RL-18

Hours per week: 35, (Mon- Fri, 9 am-  5 pm)
