Overview:

This is a Labor Service position. 


Brief Job Description (essential functions of the position):

Under general supervision, performs low-skilled mechanical work in the repair and maintenance of all assigned motor vehicles and/or equipment.

Responsibilities:

  • Examines and locates mechanical defects in a variety of motor equipment such as cranes, wrecker trucks, heavy tractor-trailers, bucket trucks, load packers, street sweepers, and other earth-moving equipment, as well as lighter vehicles, including pickup trucks and automobiles, and specialty equipment such as graffiti machines, stationary generators, and wood chipping machines.
  • Performs preventive/scheduled maintenance and bumper-to-bumper analysis on all vehicles.
  • Cleans, washes, and preps vehicles and equipment prior to repair or diagnosis. 
  • Required to tow and deliver vehicles and equipment utilizing tow trucks, flatbed trucks, and trailers. 
  • Required to perform other job-related duties as necessary and perform related work as required.


Required to work any emergency as directed by the Chief of Streets or designee.

Must be available to work any shift, Monday - Friday or Tuesday - Saturday.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • Must have at least two (2) years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, paid experience in the maintenance and repair of gasoline and diesel equipment or alternative fuel-driven equipment. 
  • Automotive Trade School Diploma may be substituted.
  • Must have and maintain a valid Massachusetts driver's license. A valid Massachusetts CDL Class B with air brake endorsement is preferred.
  • Must possess a valid Massachusetts CDL Class B with air brake endorsement within one year.
  • Must have basic knowledge of the methods, materials, and practices used in repairing, rebuilding, maintaining, and adjusting all automotive equipment, other specialty equipment, and/or alternative fuel-driven equipment. 
  • Must be proficient in basic computer skills and applications.
  • Required to have one ASE certification within one (1) year.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job.


BOSTON RESIDENCY REQUIRED
