Brief Job Description (essential functions of the job):

 

Under the supervision of the Traffic Operations Foreperson, the Traffic Operations Technician performs all work necessary for the installation and maintenance of all traffic sign systems.  

Responsibilities:

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Fabrication, installation, construction, and production of signs, poles, traffic control devices, flexible delineator posts, in street pedestrian delineators, all traffic sign control devices and  appurtenances.
  • Installs, removes, testing and wiring of all solar powered electric city-owned traffic sign speed radar feedback sign systems and signs enhanced with Light emitting diodes (LEDs) and similar devices.
  • Instructs in the field and acts as a group leader. Instructs and assists in the transport and placement of Electronic-Display Variable Message Sign/Systems (VMS).  
  • May assist with on-site training and instructional courses for traffic sign employees in all areas of traffic sign repair.   
  • Maintains record of all completed work performed by work crews and performs related duties as required.   
  • Troubleshoots malfunctioning equipment as defined by the manufacturer’s guidelines and requirements.
  • Updates and maintains an inventory of related tools and equipment.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Required to work any emergency as directed by the Commissioner of Transportation or designee.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • At least two (2) years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience in related work which include the fabrications, installation, and production of signs, plus traffic control devices and appurtenances.  
  • Basic computer skills preferred.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the position.
  • Certificate requirements:
    • Must possess a current and valid Massachusetts driver’s license.
    • Massachusetts Department of Public Safety hoisting engineers license Class 1B and 2C preferred.
